The Value of PR: George Mason University Measures its NCAA Basketball Team's Championship Run

Wed, 07/16/2008 - 11:50
Being an alumni, I receive George Mason University's Mason Spirit alumni magazine, which often has interesting little stories. The Spring 2008 has an interesting story about the PR value of the George Mason University's basketball team reaching the Final Four in 2006. The story notes that, because of the team's Cinderella Story run at the National Championship, GMU earned an estimated $677 million dollars in free media during the NCAA Tournament, in local, regional and national broadcast, prin

Exports are a cost…

Wed, 07/16/2008 - 07:32
yet another economics professor gets it right! September 02, 2007 Exports are Costs; Imports are Benefits by Don Boudreaux Today’s edition of the Chicago Tribune published this letter of mine: You’re correct that free trade likely would create more opportunities for workers in Illinois to produce goods for export (”How free trade boosts Illinois,” Editorial, Aug. 25). Never forget, though, that the ultimate benefit of trade lies not in what people must sacrifice-not in the creation of

I Am Now Properly Oriented

Tue, 07/15/2008 - 14:36
Today I had my orientation for George Mason University.  It was not too bad.  Things were well organized, and everything was pretty informational.  I am glad I went to the career services break-out session rather than the transfer section.  It had a lot of good info on internships and the career services center. I am actually a bit psyched to be going to school again.  It sounds like GMU has a pretty good business school, so hopefully my diploma will carry a little clout. Classes start Augus

More Coerced Diversity in Higher Academia

Tue, 07/08/2008 - 07:08
You may have read the Inside Higher Ed article I linked to a few days ago, about how the American Bar Association's pressure on George Mason Law to accept more black students resulted in unbelievably high failures rates among those accepted at lower standards. Inside Higher Ed has another excellent piece out, discussing how universities obsessed with an image of physical diversity are putting out viewbooks with pictures that are much more diverse than the schools' actual demographics. In some c

Systems (What is it?)

Mon, 07/07/2008 - 20:20
While I was sitting at home, I was wondering “What is a Systems Engineer?” Well to me, a System or Systems Engineer is one who works with a whole system not just individual components of the system. They work with developing the definition, the physical and functional architecture, functional and physical hierarchies, and much much more. There is a lot of baggage that comes with being a systems engineer. I’m not talk about just the knowledge, but the baggage known as friends. As a systems

Bush to Ignore Posse Comitatus Act

Mon, 07/07/2008 - 07:05
An article from the Chattanooga Times Free Press, written by a professor at George Mason University, examines the Posse Comitatus Act, and several references made by President Bush that he would be willing to ignore that act. The Posse Comitatus Act was passed during the Reconstruction era, in order to severely or completely limit the [...]

Hey Reader E-mail me! I will be in Beijing for the Olympics and in India for the next few weeks

Thu, 07/03/2008 - 01:01
Dear YouMeiTI readers, as some of you may know I have been in the first few years of course work for my phd program. The amount of time I spend on academic writing has seriously decreased my blog activity here - so sad! I will pick up the pace again when I am done with coursework in December 2008! In the meantime, I will participate in a conference on Chinese, India and US technology and trade policy at the Bangalore Institute of Technology. I am really excited for this conference as it will

How Coerced Race-Consciousness Hurts Blacks at George Mason Law

Mon, 06/30/2008 - 06:46
You may have read this piece a couple of months ago in the Wall Street Journal detailing how the American Bar Association has pressured the George Mason University School of Law to accept more minorities at lower standards, even threatening to revoke the school's accreditation. Well, GMU Law had no other choice but to begin to comply, and the results, as we see in other affirmative action programs, were not so hot. My friend Andy Guess over at Inside Higher Ed wrote a very good (yet sad!) artic

Considerations during a SharePoint conference: FraternIT 2.0

Sat, 06/28/2008 - 10:42
Considerations during a SharePoint conference: FraternIT 2.0 June 28th, 2008 It’s midday during a SharePoint conference and this presentation has ended early.  The discussion has become a fairly technical one around backing up SharePoint projects — at topic on which I’m not super interested in.  This has, however, given me time to consider some of the applications of collaboration tools and fraternity & sorority life.  Let’s take a step back: SharePoint? SharePoint is a Microsoft tool t

Heller Is a Helluva Win

Fri, 06/27/2008 - 07:08
Congratulations to all those of us who love and cherish the Second Amendment! Yesterday, the Supreme Court confirmed that the Second Amendment does indeed protect individuals' right to own guns. I would like to congratulate everyone who worked so hard on both this case and this cause, particularly the fine people at my law school, the George Mason University School of Law, who helped like no other legal academics and students ever would. I haven't yet had the time to read Scalia's decision in i

War is God’s Way of Teaching Americans Geography

War is God’s Way of Teaching Americans Geography Posted at 10:27 on Monday 23 June 2008 by Propagandee Representative government presupposes an intelligent, efficient, and universal electorate. The character of such a government will ever be determined by the character and caliber of those who compose it. -The Urantia Book Boy, are we in trouble. Five plus years into the Iraq War, only one in seven Americans can find Iraq on a map. Only two out of five know and can n

Self Healing Intrusion Tolerance...

Sun, 06/22/2008 - 14:38
Tim Greene from Computerworld wrote a story last week titled "Security software makes virtual servers a moving target." This story draws attention to a story on the same topic that popped up a while ago (see Dark Reading) about some research led by George Mason University professor Arun Sood that is being productized and marketed as "Self Cleansing Intrusion Tolerance (SCIT)" SCIT is based upon the premise that taking machines (within a virtualized environment) in and out of service rapidl

Otra vez Malthus ¿el nuevo apocalipsis?

Sat, 06/21/2008 - 16:22

Walter E. Williams: Are Americans Truly Against Slavery?

Sat, 06/21/2008 - 11:38
I saw this article by Walter E. Williams appear in my inbox via The Atlasphere email list the other day. It asks a question and makes a point that is very similar to what I wrote about for my master's thesis and how I went about defending it. One of the big points I touched on in my MA work in this regard was that slavery is a matter of definition, not of degree. That one really drove the lefties nuts. It was fun to watch, sort of like poking a stick into a pile of thatching ants and making them

A Lovely Dinner By Myself, Reading about Water Policy, Fecal Contamination, and Irrigation Systems

Wed, 06/18/2008 - 14:41
I'm off to India for several projects.  I'm first heading to Bangalore as part of a 14-person US delegation to participate in the 2008 China-India-US Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation Policy. This is part of George Mason University’s Science and Trade Policy Program and the conference this year will be held at the Bangalore Institute of Science.  Well I am sitting on the Information Technology panel so I feel competent in that topic area. But I have 2 weeks to quickly learn a
