Student Government senate and leadership take official oaths

There's new student leadership at George Mason University. Incoming senators, the newly-elected vice president and student body president all took their oaths at noon Wednesday on the Johnson Center North Plaza.

D’Leon Barnett and Jacky Yoo begin their reign as the next student body president and vice president after winning in March with 31 percent of the vote. They succeed Devraj Dasgupta and Tyler King.

Move-in process tweaked

This week hundreds of returning students and nearly 2,000 freshmen moved into the dormitories at George Mason University.

PAB expansion complete, open for fall semester

Cross off another construction project. Students returning to school this fall will feast their eyes on the completed expansion of the Performing Arts Building on Mason’s Fairfax campus.

The addition adds two dance studios, a large lobby, locker room, an instrument rehearsal hall, percussion room, and a wellness room as well as many other spaces, Project Manager Nancy Pickens said.

Hampton Roads residents get stuck in elevator [updated]

Five Hampton Roads resident students started the semester by getting trapped in and later rescued from their building’s elevator Sunday night.

The group was traveling from the third floor down to the first floor a little after 11 p.m. when the elevator car started to shake. The car made a loud noise and then dropped slightly, according to Molly O’Rourke, who was one of those trapped in the car.

Textbook rental service adds more titles for fall

Students feeling a squeeze on their wallets and pocketbooks may find a solution to their financial woes this semester.

The George Mason University official bookstore increased its collection of printed texts available for rental, bringing the total number of rental-eligible textbook titles to 600 for the fall 2010 semester, according to Jonathan Howard, textbook manager of the bookstore. In the spring, Connect2Mason reported that the bookstore offered 50 titles for rent.

SUB I addition opens, offers 'enrollment central' for students

Beginning in the fall semester, current students will find Student Union Building I to be a one-stop shop for student services and some university life departments.

The addition to the back of the building, on the side near the student apartments, has been completed and is ready for use. A great deal of the space is being used by student services, including the registrar, financial aid, and part of the admissions office.

Pilot House sets sail, NY-style pizza docks at Mason

As of New School Year’s Eve 2010, Ike’s is no longer the only late-night eatery on the George Mason University campus.

The Pilot House opened its doors to the Mason community Sunday at 5 p.m. Attached to the new dormitory Hampton Roads, The Pilot House is a 120-seat dining venue that is expected to alleviate the rush at Ike’s.
