Back from spring break and need something fun to do this weekend? We’ve got the events right here! This week brings Cherry Blossoms, the circus, and a cake show!

It’s that time of year again! The cherry blossoms are blooming along the Potomac River and the kick off for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in downtown D.C. Saturday. A complete event lineup can be found at the festival’s official website.

Bands to duke it out for spot at Mason Day

Brought to you by WGMU and Program Board, GM-Unit, Mood Indigo, the Mason Glee Club and Early RyzerzZ Crew will duke it out Friday evening for a chance to perform at this year’s Mason Day.

MC/DC Mason’s Competition of Dance and Choir will be held in the Johnson Center Atrium from 9:30 – 10:30 p.m. where the competing groups will battle for the crowd’s affection.

Panel to discuss impact of social media on the Middle East

During Egypt’s recent political uprising, social media played a major role in rallying Egyptians around their cause of pushing former President Hosni Mubarak out of office.

On Saturday, Oneblue.tv will be filming the pilot episode of their new internet broadcast, with the first topic being “Can Social Media Bring Democratic Reform to the Middle East?”

Merten to resign in 2012

George Mason University president Alan Merten will resign in June 2012, the university announced on March 23.

“Today the Board of Visitors accepted Dr. Alan Merten's request to retire 
as President of George Mason University, effective June 30, 2012,” Rector Ernst Volgenau said in an e-mail sent to students. “The 
fifteen years of Dr. Merten's presidency have been remarkable and 
transformative.”

New calls for boosting nation's college graduation rate

Vice President Biden announced new initiatives to boost the nation’s graduation rate when he spoke Tuesday at the first annual Grad Nation Summit.  The announcement is part of President Obama’s goal to increase the nation’s graduation rate by 50 percent by 2020.
