iCafe holds first event of the semester

The Office of International Programs and Services, Peer Empowerment Program, and the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education held the first iCafe of the semester on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The multicultural event, held in the Patriot Lounge in Sub I, featured international games, snacks, and teas.

Dr. Jill Biden visits GMU campus to celebrate education initiative

On Wednesday, Oct. 3, Dr. Jill Biden came to George Mason University to celebrate “Joining Forces,” a program designed to educate the public on the importance of honoring veterans and military families.

There are over 100 colleges and universities who have signed on to the central mission of “Joining Forces.” The initiative emphasizes the preparation of educators in creating an ideal learning environment for military children.

University to expand online dining orders

George Mason University Services is planning to expand the dining system to include online food orders.

“We are looking for web-based opportunity,” said Mark Kraner, Executive Director of Campus Retail Operations .

According to Kraner, the new system would allow students to go online and place their orders with participating restaurants. After entering in their G numbers, and the order has processed, students may then pick up their food. Faculty and staff, or anyone with a Mason ID, would also be able to utilize the new system.

Obama to hold rally at Mason

President Obama will hold a campaign rally at Mason's Center for the Arts Concert Hall on Friday, October 5.

Doors will be open at 8:30 a.m., and the event is expected to start around 10:45 a.m.

There is a limited number of tickets on reserve for students with a strict one ticket per student limit. Students must have their student ID to get a ticket.

Tickets will start being distributed on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 9 a.m. in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall lobby.

 

2012 Fall for the Book recap

Last week, George Mason University's annual Fall for the Book Festival was in full swimg, bringing many acclaimed authors to the campus and surrounding area. In case you were busy studying, in class, or just missed the event, here are some of the highlights from the festival:

OPINION: The dilemma concerning standardized testing and educational success

What makes a student successful? In an attempt to assess students in an easy and cheap manner, many schools use test scores to determine who will make a successful student. Two recent articles in the national media, each focusing on the beginning and ending of one’s high school career, highlight the troubles facing schools as they attempt to better understand test scores. An analysis of these two articles will allow Mason to better understand what role a university will play in shaping the lives of these high school students.

GMU transportation makes changes to meet increased ridership

The George Mason University transportation office has made some recent changes to its service in order to accommodate an increase in riders.

The office expanded its Mason to Metro shuttle services and added eight charging stations for electric cars around the Fairfax and Arlington campuses.

2012 year-end movie picks

After a largely lackluster summer season, October, November and December look to hold some of the best movies of 2012. Arts by George! provides an evening like no other

In its seventh year, Mason’s annual Arts by George! event was held on September 29 in the Center for Performing Arts, the Delaski Performing Arts Building, Harris Theater, as well as outside by the Mason statue. The event involved students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the outside community.

Brian Marcus, associate dean of development for the College of Visual and Performing Arts, said that “the whole idea [of the event] is to bring the arts at Mason into the community to support students in school.”
