Support to extend benefits to LGBTQ faculty, staff shown by administrators, students, staff
|In the months leading up to the November state elections, Mason’s faculty senate, president and student government spoke out about their desire to see health benefits extended fully to LGBTQ faculty and staff.
Under Virginia’s current constitution, Mason cannot extend health benefits to the partners and families of LGBTQ faculty and staff members because of how the commonwealth defines marriage.
State policies prohibit the university from using state money for practices that conflict with state law.
Mason's endowment numbers lower than other comparable universities
|As part of the university’s new strategic plan, Mason officials are campaigning to increase endowments. Currently, Mason’s endowment is fairly small compared to other Virginia public universities.
Mason is on track to reach its goal of increasing endowment by 10 percent in the next year, but administrators and officials are looking even further into the future.
“It’s not just about this year, it’s about making sure that you do it year after year after year,” said Jim Laychak, the associate vice president of University Advancement.
Hillel hosts dinner with Holocaust survivors
|Hillel hosted a dinner in the Hub ballroom, inviting students and Holocaust survivors to connect and share stories. The Expressions of the Holocaust dinner, held on Nov. 13, hosted over 40 Holocaust survivors. Hillel Executive Director Ross Diamond said the dinner was a multi sensory event. Music was performed while a silent art auction was held.
Mason men's basketball defeats Northern Iowa 76-70
|The Mason men’s basketball team defeated Northern Iowa 76-70 at home on Saturday at the Patriot Center. Sophomore Marko Gujanicic recorded his second double-double in two straight games as a starter, while Sherrod Wright tallied 23 points and Patrick Holloway, who started in place of injured point guard Bryon Allen, ended with 11 points respectively.

Documentary exposing the dangers of uranium mining features at Cinema Arts Theatre
|Cinema Arts Theatre on Main Street held a free screening and Q&A of an environmental documentary titled “Hot Water,” written and produced by Lizabeth Rogers.
The event, held on Nov. 14, was sponsored by the We the People Campaign. It exposed the possible hazards of uranium mining in the United States.
Nuclear power plants have a legacy of both financial and environmental strain through uranium mining, leaving behind enough chemical residues to contaminate local air, food, and water supplies.

Mason men's soccer defeats VCU in overtime to advance to the A-10 Championship game
|The Mason men’s soccer team defeated in-state rival Virginia Commonwealth University 3-2 on Friday night and became the first team to represent George Mason University in a championship game since its move to the Atlantic-10 conference.
Timi Mulgrew sealed the win with a header off a Zach Herstek cross only 34 seconds into the first overtime period. Herstek had a goal for himself in the 27th minute to bring Mason back to level terms after Dennis Castillo had capitalized on a poor play by the Patriots’ defense to give VCU the early lead.
Anytime Dining comes to Mason next fall
|All you can eat, when you want to eat it.
That’s the motto of the new Anytime Dining system that Mason Dining will be implementing next fall.
On Nov. 7, the student senate passed a resolution that expressed support of this dining plan. The resolution was submitted by Stacy Fleming, the chairwoman of the University Services Committee.
Mason women's basketball defeats Utah Valley 82-64 in home opener
|Mason women’s basketball sailed past Utah Valley last night, in an 82-64 win in the team’s home opener at the Patriot Center. Senior Janaa Pickard tallied a career-high 21 points and 21 rebounds in the last home opener of her Mason career, sealing the victory for the Patriots.
“We have kind of nicknamed her ’The X-Factor,’” said Nyla Milleson, the Patriots’ head coach. “I truly believe that she’s the X-Factor for us to be successful.”
