OPINION: Cuts to SNAP may be mitigated by donating to local food banks
|For many Americans, November brings thoughts of a gluttonous holiday meal. But, for those Americans enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as SNAP, November brings a kick in the face reminder of their poverty.
On Nov. 1, a recession era boost in benefits expired, thus approximately 47 million people will have to cope with reduced food stamps just as the holiday season begins. The general consensus within the GOP seems to be that if the food stamp recipients work hard enough, they should be able to pull themselves out of poverty.
Student Government urges Parking Services Advisory Committee to reduce costs
|Student Government recently passed a resolution entitled “A Resolution in Support of a Parking Citation Fine Reduction Policy,” which supports a 15 percent decrease in all parking fines. It was passed 33-0-2 at the Nov. 21 meeting.
Evan Del Duke, the author of the resolution and the speaker pro-tempore of the senate, said the main goal of the resolution is to start a conversation with administrative offices, such as the Parking Services Advisory Committee, about how to save students money on parking costs.

Letter to the Editor: How Mason has engaged the student body about a Good Samaritan policy|A recent issue in Fourth Estate discussed concerns regarding the University’s lack of a medical amnesty policy, or a ‘Good Samaritan’ policy as it is commonly known. Mason men's basketball defeats Rhode Island, 61-54|The Mason men’s basketball team defeated Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Center, 61-54. Jalen Jenkins posted 11 rebounds and five blocks, while tying his career-high in scoring with nine points. Sherrod Wright tallied 16 points, and Marko Gujanicic had 13 on the night. Bryon Allen added 6 assists, but ended the night with only six points. “I know that every night I’m not going to score and make every shot,” Allen said. “But I tried to keep my defensive energy going.”
