Cooks and Crafts: Elementary Ice Cream
|Sherlock Holmes was an essential part of my childhood, as important to my upbringing as learning the alphabet and table manners. My mom would read to me from a beat up tome containing dozens of his and Dr. Watson’s often thrilling adventures. From the mysteries on the moors of Baskerville Hall to the strange murders caused by a “Speckled Band,” I was hooked.
Provost search committee releases names of final candidates
|The names of the four finalists to the Provost search process were released in an email announcement to Mason students and faculty late Monday night.
"Over the past six weeks, the search committee reviewed more than 70 applicants for the position of provost," Kelly wrote in the email. "During the holiday break we interviewed 12 semi-finalists. I want to take a moment to thank all the members of the committee for giving up a significant portion of their break for this effort."
Students and faculty take time to remember historical heroes
|Mason’s class council held a celebration of the March on Washington’s 50th anniversary with a picture gallery at The Ridge on Jan. 24.
The photo exhibit consisted of different black and white photos from Martin Luther King’s era and that of President Barrack Obama.
The historical pictures were some that students have seen throughout their elementary years. Captions and dates were shown underneath the pictures so visitors could read about the story behind each photo and see when the pictures were taken.
New university policy regulates campus utility vehicles
|The many golf carts zipping around campus are now being officially regulated for the first time thanks to the new University Policy 1131. The new policy, enacted earlier this month, covers the use of motorized utility vehicles (MUVs) on campus, including golf carts. MUVs, which are plentiful at Mason, are vehicles that are not licensed by the State and not intended for road use. The policy covers the purchase, operation and maintenance of MUVs on campus.
PREVIEW: preseason outlook for EIVA conference
|While other teams at Mason have and are continuing to transition over to the ultra competitive Atlantic 10, men’s volleyball remains in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) in 2014.
Letter to the Editor: Mason to lobby for greater funding
|On Thursday, January 30, 2014, more than one hundred members of the George Mason community will travel down to the state capitol in Richmond, Virginia, for Mason Lobbies 2014. Mason Lobbies is a day of advocacy where students, faculty, staff, alumni, and administration join together to collectively advocate for Mason as “One Institution with One Voice.” The initiative was started last year with the goal of demonstrating the important investment that is George Mason University.
From Paul VI to Mason, Holloway shoots for success
|When Paul Hewitt signed on to coach the Mason men’s basketball team in May 2011, he needed a shooter. So, he turned straight away to longtime acquaintance and AAU coach, Keith Stevens, who gave him one name: Patrick Holloway.
“I actually started recruiting him before I even saw him play a high school game,” said Hewitt. “And, we were fortunate enough to get him.”
Mason makes basketball sustainable
|Striving to go green, the Office of Sustainability at Mason is raising awareness for green efforts on campus at a venue where trash seems to overflow: basketball games.
This Saturday’s basketball game against George Washington University will host an event called the Game Day Challenge. It’s a competition between different universities to see who can properly recycle and compost the most during a single sporting event.
Dining changes welcome students back for spring semester
|The initial phases of Mason’s update to its dining facilities are starting to appear around campus this semester. The biggest changes thus far have taken place in the Johnson Center. In preparation for further renovations, Hot Spot and Sprouts were moved to the Hub where Original Burger was previously located. Original Burger was permanently closed.
A look back at losing streaks -- men's basketball
|Mason men’s basketball let another close fought game slip through the fingertips in the waning minutes last night.
Traveling north to take on Fordham in a battle of teams winless in Atlantic 10 play, Mason struggled to hold onto a 10-point lead in the second half.
After scoring only 36 points through the first 25 minutes of play, Fordham’s offense clicked over the final 15 minutes. Connecting on nearly 71 percent of their attempted field goals, the Rams stormed past the Patriots for a 76-70 victory.
