Broadside

In a league of its own (albeit a bad one)

My father once told me about a game he used to play with my uncle before I was born. Every year, my family would head to the beach and my dad would sit with a beer in hand and rate passing women on their looks. He used a scale of one – 10 and would debate with my uncle over who was the best looking. My dad was never the classy type.

Broadside Interviews: Stars of She’s Out of My League

The names Alice Eve and Krysten Ritter may not be universally recognizable, but given Krysten’s past work in popular romantic comedies like 27 Dresses and Confessions of a Shopaholic and Alice’s upcoming role in Sex and the City 2, you can expect that to change very quickly.

Both are put in the spotlight in She’s Out of My League, which opened on March 12. Broadside recently spoke with the two ladies about their movie.

From the vault: Stomping the Pavement

When thinking about the year 1992, what comes to mind?

Gangsta rap? Flannel shirts? Nicktoons? Maybe the 90s are a forgotten memory — a period of time that was much like today in that the underground had become the mainstream.

With the sudden and widespread recognition of albums like Nirvana’s Nevermind and Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, popular music had shifted.

In my own words…

Hi, my name is Erin Thompson and I am a senior in the George Mason University LIFE Program. I have been eating a gluten-free diet since I was 7 years old.
At the beginning, my parents and I didn’t exactly know what the problem with my health was. I was sick and was losing weight. I went to many doctors, and one told me that I had celiac disease. Celiac is made of oats, barley and rye. The only foods that are safe for me are rice, gluten-free bread, gluten-free English muffins, gluten-free muffins and shrimp.

Cardinals rule in four-set win: Mason falls to Ball State on Friday

The George Mason University’s men’s volleyball team lost its fifth consecutive match to the Ball State Cardinals in four sets (25-30, 30-27, 22-30, 23-30) last Friday.
With the loss, the Patriots fall to a 4-11 overall record, as the Cardinals improve to 11-7.

Mason fought until the end of every set, but the Ball State offense was playing its best game on Friday night.

Homer, sweet homer: Montefusco hits go-ahead single in home opener

Duquesne University Dukes catcher Jared Bowser did not get much of a chance to hit the ball after getting hit by a pitch twice as the George Mason University’s baseball team and Dukes totaled seven hit batsmen.

Scags claw back, beat Patriots: Mason surrenders 27-point lead

After being rammed by VCU in the quarterfinal round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, the youthful George Mason University men’s basketball team settled for a postseason appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament where they took on the Fairfield Scags. And their inexperience showed as the Scags rallied from a 27-point deficit in the second half to oust the Patriots 101-96 in the first round of the CIT.

Powell’s Playbook: Madness only begins in March

So here, in the last column for this season, I will write about the men’s basketball team in retrospect.

The first issue I will address: I was right. It turns out that the terrible Colonial Athletic Association’s postseason tournament performance was the last dagger in the season.

Going to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament was not the expected end to the Patriots’ season, especially with a lose in the first round after being the headliner.

Like father, like son: Junior adjusts to new role and provides an immediate impact

Last season, junior Eric Lucas recorded 309 digs, falling two digs short of matching the highest individual single-season record for digs of all-time. The record was set by his father Ric Lucas 25 years ago.

Caller unknown: Former goalkeeper tries out for MLS

Former George Mason University men’s soccer goalkeeper Sean Kelley had always hoped for the opportunity to play professionally, but it was never his intention to ignore a call from one of the Major League Soccer teams.

The spring semester was underway, and in late January, a phone call from an unknown number disrupted Kelley during class. He thought nothing of it until he received a call from Patriots Head Coach Greg Andrulis a little bit later.
