Women's volleyball enters CAA competition with dominating win against Georgia State

In front of a crowd of nearly 300 people on Friday night, the George Mason University women’s volleyball team began their CAA conference season and had the start they were looking for.

Facing the Georgia State Panthers at the RAC in Fairfax, the lady Patriots won in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 28-26). With that result Mason improved to 1-0 in the conference and 3-11 overall, while Georgia State fell to 0-1 in the conference and 2-11 overall.

COLUMN: NFL, not replacement referees to blame for poor officiating

The first two weeks of the NFL season have come and gone. There are new faces in new places, swapping old digs for new Nike-sponsored jerseys. But not only have there been player swaps but referee swaps as well.

COLUMN: Basketball non-conference schedule strenghthened amid depleted CAA

The official release of the men's basketball schedule marks the moment when basketball fans pin down which games are the best competition, home games and any major conference foes. This season, more than any other in the past decade, will ride heavily on the non-conference opponents that Mason will play at the early onset.

Club football games to be broadcast live on Mason Cable Network

The Mason Cable Network in collaboration with Connect2Mason will begin broadcasting home club football games in their entirety, beginning with this Saturday's home opener against Onondaga College at 2 p.m. This will mark the first time in George Mason University's history that a student media outlet will broadcast a televised club sport game.

Tale from the Tour: Mason alum Josh Apple's road to professional golf

My name is Josh Apple, a recent graduate of George Mason University, where I served as the Sports and Recreation Editor of Connect2Mason for two years and was a four-year starter on the Division I golf team.

Now I am pursuing my dream and chasing a career as a professional golfer.

This may sound like easy life’s work, but that is far from the truth.

Patriots extend streak with weekend wins

In blowout fashion, the George Mason men’s soccer team (5-0) extended their season opening win streak with a 5-1 win over St. Peter’s (2-2) and a 3-2 win over St. Francis (1-4).

Despite changes on the defensive line from the 2011 season, the Patriots limited St. Peter’s scoring power Friday night. It wasn’t a difficult job since the Peacocks’ goals have overwhelmingly come from Noah Sadaoui in the early season. The defensive dominance was only a continuance from winning the D.C. College Cup only days before, allowing one goal in two wins.

COLUMN: Is there too much pressure on Robert Griffin III?

The Washington Redskins haven't had a franchise quarterback in my lifetime. Since 1992 they have started 21 different quarterbacks. Yes, you read that right, 21 starting quarterbacks in 20 years. The Green Bay Packers have had three starters in that time frame--if you include two starts by back-up Matt Flynn in the last games of the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The one position that the 'Skins have been unable to successfully fill may have found its proverbial savior.

COLUMN: Better safe than sorry for Nats ace Strasburg

Every time Stephen Strasburg takes the mound, all eyes are entranced by the young righthander's surgically repaired elbow. Every inning pitched pushes the minute hand on his shutdown clock closer and closer to the hour of his inevitable benching. Like Cinderella at the ball, Strasburg's stroke of midnight is coming and coming fast. With only two to three starts left, Strasburg has become the center of attention in all of baseball. But, shutting him down may be one of the noblest decisions Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo could make.

Women's Volleyball wins in home opener versus UMBC

The women’s volleyball team did not disappoint in their home opener Tuesday night, facing the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers (2-3) at the RAC in front a supportive home crowd. The match was a nail-biter and had tilted in a not-so-desirable direction at one point, but at the end Mason defeated the Retrievers 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-11).
