Much Moore To Come

Twenty years ago, a 22-year-old George Mason University second baseman was selected All-Met by the Home Plate Club. Today, he has worked his way up to the big leagues, not as a player, but as the general manager of the Kansas City Royals. That individual goes by the name of Dayton Moore.
Moore is entering his third year with the Royals after being hired by the organization on May 30, 2006. The now 42-year old is 144-180 in his two seasons, but the team improved their win total by six games and clawed their way from the cellar of the American League Central division to fourth place last season.

Four years ago, Chris Looze departed George Mason University as the all-time leader in home runs and RBIs. Senior left fielder Scott Krieger displaced Looze for the home run record last season and gained sole possession of the RBI record after the baseball team (26-5, 7-2) won their seventh straight with a 12-0 rout over the Liberty Flames (21-10, 9-2) on Wednesday afternoon.
Mason entered the week ranked 25th by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and 30th by the National College Baseball Writers Association. For a team that never earned a national ranking in its school history, Mason already holds a 2-0 record as a ranked team after annihilating the George Washington Colonials 17-5 on Tuesday and the Flames on Wednesday.
Seniors Look for Volleyball Opportunities Overseas

The end of a collegiate volleyball career is just a new start for the men’s volleyball alumni. Whether they choose to play overseas or for professional teams in the United States, the men’s volleyball program has been successful in shaping professional athletes.
The three seniors from last season, Hudson Bates, Mark Burik and R.J. Goubeaux, are all playing professionally. Bates and Goubeaux are practicing with Team USA in Anaheim, Calif., and Burik is playing for Vingakers Volleybollklubb in Sweden.

Senior left fielder Scott Krieger dove for the fly ball and robbed designated hitter and catcher Cody Stanley from a base-hit in the eighth inning as the baseball team (23-5, 5-2) broke the school record with 19 consecutive home wins in their 6-3 victory over the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks (17-9, 5-3).

The baseball team (22-5, 5-2) won their 18th consecutive home game in their 4-2 win over the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks (17-8, 5-2) on Friday. Timely hitting and defense in addition to the strong performance from junior pitcher Kevin Crum (4-2) helped the Patriots in their win.

The baseball team (21-5, 4-2) extended the nation’s longest active home-winning streak to 17 straight with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Georgetown Hoyas (10-16, 3-3) on the first day of April.
“Our pitching has been outstanding day in and day out. We struck out 17 and walked one,” said Head Coach Bill Brown. “Those are just astronomical numbers. When you’re in a game and you’re trying to get 27 outs and 17 of them never get put in play you’re going to win the baseball game.”
Freshman pitcher Ryan Pfaeffle (1-0) struck out 10 of the Hoyas’ batters in 5-1/3 innings to earn his first collegiate win. He gave up only one run on five hits and one walk.
The Weiss Man

Like former major leaguer Rey Ordóñez, senior shortstop Brent Weiss is a skilled defensive fielder who will, on the rarest occasion, display his power. On last Tuesday afternoon, Weiss homered for just the second time in his career as the baseball team (20-5, 4-2) achieved 20 wins faster than any other team in school history after defeating the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers (8-10) with a 5-3 win.

The softball team (13-18, 0-6) briefly held a two-run lead against the Virginia Cavaliers (20-9, 2-4), but the team fell for the seventh straight time after their 3-2 loss in eight innings.
Head Coach Joe Verbanic tweaked with his lineup, putting freshman second baseman Alyssa See batting at the leadoff spot and senior center fielder Alison Bryan hitting behind her. Bryan, who was held hitless in her last 12 at-bats including an 0-for-11 performance in last weekend’s series against the Towson Tigers, singled in the first inning. Freshman third baseman Tori Dudley hit her third home run of the season to give Mason the early 2-0 lead.
The Cavaliers answered with two runs in the second inning after left fielder Alison Pittman tied the game with her RBI single.
International Week Sports Kicks Off with Cricket Tournament

Mason has a large section of International Students coming from the cricket playing regions like Asia, Australia and Britain where Cricket is a very popular sport.
This year nine teams competed against each other for the coveted Champion’s Trophy in the Eighth Annual International Cricket Tournament (ICT) held at Intramural Field 3 at the Field House on April 5.
Calling for an NCAA Football Team

With an accomplished basketball team, George Mason University students, faculty and staff all share a raucous spirit that livens the campus. However, some Mason fans feel as though that spirit is weakened during basketball’s off-season. One way these spectators think that this issue could be addressed is by the university gaining an NCAA football team.
