PHOTOS: Lady Patriots Flatten Iona 21-6

The women's lacrosse team trounced Iona College earlier this afternoon, ending the game with a score of 21-6. According to GoMason.com, "the 21 goals scored is tied for the third-highest single-game output in school history."

Basketball: Patriots Lose To Lions

The Patriots lose to the Penn State Nittany Lions 77-73. This St. Patrick’s Day, the only green visible in Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center was worn by the handful of Mason fans during their matchup against #2 seeded Lions.
Patriots Lose Heartbreaker in OT

Mason looked as if they had their first quality road win locked up with about 5 secs to play, then Talor Battle threw up an off balance three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Momentum suddenly shifted and Mason fans knew their season was about to come to an end. In OT, Battle, who wasn't shooting particularly great until that buzzer beater, added 8 more and ended the Patriots season. Many people have been emailing me asking why Larranaga didn't intentionally foul to prevent the Nittany Lions from even attempting a three, here is what a local PA newsite had to say about it:
- "Patriots' head coach Jim Larranaga doesn't have his team foul when leading by three late in the game because it has defended the perimeter so well all year. The Patriots are ranked 14th nationally in 3-point field goal defense."
Mason Travels to Happy Valley

- Mason's season is not over yet. While they cannot win the NCAA title, they have the opportunity to play in the National Invitational Tournament, which kicks off tonight.
The Patriots will travel to State College, Penn., to face the Nittany Lions of Penn State at the Bryce Jordan Center. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
The Nittany Lions finished 22-11 and they are 5-0 lifetime against Mason, 3-0 since Jim Larranaga took over in Fairfax. Mason comes in 22-10 and are fresh off their 21-point defeat in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game against VCU.
Tonight's game will mark the 4-year anniversary of Mason winning their first-ever NCAA Tournament game in Dayton against the Michigan State Spartans 75-65.

Mason Wins Against Towson, 56-48

With 25 seconds remaining in the game, sophomore guard Cam Long made a contested fade-away 3-pointer as the shot clock expired. The shot gave George Mason Patriots a commanding 54-48 lead over the Towson Tigers.
Mason would go on to beat Towson 56-48
Towson had the slightest glimmer of hope for a comeback, but the Tigers missed a handful of 3-point attempts. The Patriots held Towson without a basket in the final 3:57.
Basketball: Patriots Beat JMU, 71-59

The George Mason Patriots beat James Madison University, 71-59, in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum.
The win moves the Patriots one step closer to winning the CAA Tournament and provides some much needed revenge for the Patriots, who lost to JMU exactly a month ago in Harrisonburg.
After the opening tip, the game quickly became a scrappy slugfest. The Patriots faithful fans added fuel to the fire by loudly jeering the Dukes in this gritty, passionate battle of state rivals.
OPINION: Steroids, The Never Ending Story

When we finally thought the end of the steroids era was near, another bombshell erupts. The deemed savior of our nation’s pastime, Alex Rodriguez, was accused and later admitted to using performance enhancing drugs during his time with the Texas Rangers. The feeling of shock fell over the entire league with the sudden announcement. A-Rod was supposed to save the game from the very drug he admits to using. It is like our very own “Say it ain’t so, Joe” moment.

In front of a joint session of Congress last Wednesday, President Barack Obama said, “We have lived through an era where too often, short-term gains were prized over long-term prosperity.”
President Obama was not speaking about the issue of steroids in baseball, but he
very well could have been.
The president was speaking about the tenuous state of the U.S. economy, but he did not blatantly place blame on his predecessor for the economic predicament. Nor did he say what should have been done or denigrate those who made mistakes.

In what is sure to be a thrilling game, Mason will be competing in the quarterfinals against the winner of the previous night's JMU/William & Mary game at 6 p.m.
