Students venture through Italy in unique art exhibit

Last summer, twelve School of Art students traveled to Italy to unleash their creativity in a course called “Seeing and Responding in Italy.” Their resulting works are now featured in an exhibit titled after the class  and will be available for all Mason students, free of charge, between Feb. 10 and March 7.

Situated in Mason Hall’s Atrium gallery, the exhibit displays the students’ work in several mediums, mainly painting and photography.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr’s performance resulted in a record-breaking 73 million television viewers tuning in, instantly infecting America with the  Beatlemania craze.

Dr. Jane Hooper contextualizes "Africans in India" exhibit with historical lecture

Dr. Jane Hooper, a historian and professor at Mason, spoke at a lecture and reception held in Mason Hall’s Meese Conference Room on Jan. 30.

Although the general public was invited, History and Art History students and professors made up a majority of the audience.

The lecture was organized by the Office of Global & International Strategies in order to add an extra layer of depth to the neighboring art exhibit, “Africans in India: From Slaves to Generals and Rulers.”

Second annual visual and performing arts career and internship fair seeks artists

Students and alumni interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts have the chance to meet with and talk to active members of the DMV area’s theater community at the upcoming annual Arts in the Real World Internship and Career Fair.

On Feb. 11, the Mason CVPA Alumni Chapter and University Career Services will be overseeing an internship and career fair that provides opportunities for both students and alumni to show their resumes and portfolios to theaters and other businesses that thrive off of the work of students and college graduates.

Black White and Thread exhibits the history of black hair

The Art and Design Building’s Fine Art Gallery springs into the semester with work by VCU professor and artist, Sonya Clark, in her exhibit “Black and White and Thread All Over.”

The exhibit will be shown until Feb. 21, in conjunction with the Department of African and African American Studies and in honor of Black History Month.

In honor of Veterans Day, graduate student Patrick Sargent pushed for an event to both commemorate the sacrifices of the American military and brought the Mason community together.

Mason Players revive vaudeville in The Merchant

The Mason Players harken back to the vaudeville era with upcoming production of “The Merchant” by Titus Maccius Plautus.

Ed Gero, faculty director and adaptor of “The Merchant,” remembered this play from a previous production he did in high school.

Artist Min Li exposes Mason campus to traditional Chinese art

Artist Min Li comes to Mason campus to battle against the "made in China" image of Chinese art.

This month, the Confucius Institute welcomes visitors to its Chinese Paper Cutting Exhibit at Mason. The exhibit is located in the JC 123 Gallery and features both the traditional works of artists from China's Fujian province and the works of modern artist Min Li.

The works have been transported to several universities in the U.S. with the help of Li’s liason to Mason Yunhan Zhang.

Peasant Theater sets the stage for aspiring theatrical artists

Mason junior, Conor Kyle saw a problem growing in the theater community: theater was too expensive and inaccessible for struggling college students.

He wanted to start a theater company that does away with these problems, providing free theater to all presenting the work of any Mason student. He called it "Peasant Theater."

Kyle said, “Peasant Theater is a new student organization created by myself with the idea that we produce student written and directed stage work of any kind and that includes sketches, comedies and full length plays.”

"Six Characters in Search of an Author" kicks off Mason Player 2013-2014 season

Over the weekend of Oct. 4-6, Mason Players produced Pirandello's famous meta-theatrical piece “Six Characters in Search of an Author.”
