The Invisible Children group on campus hosted an open mic night to raise money for an IC-endorsed organization called Schools for Schools. The event was held in the final days of
fundraising for the organization and a four dollar charge at the door was added to the fund.
“We have one week left to make money for schools and we thought this would be a fun way to bring in the new school year,” said Invisible Children member Grace Mcdevitt.
The event, which was hosted in the Bistro last Friday, started with the film Students in Northern Uganda. The film explained that Schools for Schools is raising money and awareness for children in Northern Uganda who are in schools
that are not funded, understaffed and unkempt. The fundraising that the George Mason University Invisible
Children group is participating in is a worldwide competition raising as much money as they can in a certain period of time.
The open mic night was entertained by volunteers expressing themselves in ways that varied from singing and dancing to
reading poetry. While the entertainment did not directly comfort children in Uganda, many performers openly endorsed the group’s cause and thanked the audience for giving their time and money to that organization.
According to their flier, Invisible Children’s actions are in response to a rebel group in Northern Uganda called the Lord’s Resistance Army who has been abducting children and
forcing them to fight the civil war in Uganda.
Invisible Children has many events throughout the year, including Displace Mason. They meet every other Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center.
