Mason Math Student Wins First Prize in Poster Session

By Communications Department Director Patty Snellings.

Steve Hendrickson, an undergraduate mathematics major at Mason, was a first-prize award winner at the 2008 Joint Mathematics Meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America, held in San Diego, Ca., Jan. 5-9, 2008. Hendrickson won the $100 cash award in the MAA Undergraduate Research Poster Competition, sponsored by all of the major mathematical organizations in the country.

His poster, based on research carried out under Mason mentor Dr. Juan Cebral, was titled “Hemodynamic Analysis of a Cerebral Aneurysm.” Hendrickson and fellow math major Andrew Kercher represented the Mason Undergraduate Research in Computational Mathematics (URCM) program at the San Diego meeting. The URCM program is part of a National Science Foundation-sponsored initiative designed to increase the number of computational mathematicians in the future national work force.

The annual joint AMS and MAA meeting is the premier showcase of mathematics held in the United States. There were a total of 170 posters, many with several authors. Approximately 300 undergraduates participated.
