Power Soares

Senior left fielder Scott Krieger dove for the fly ball and robbed designated hitter and catcher Cody Stanley from a base-hit in the eighth inning as the baseball team (23-5, 5-2) broke the school record with 19 consecutive home wins in their 6-3 victory over the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks (17-9, 5-3).
Junior catcher Chris Henderson homered in his first at-bat as his hit just cleared the wall in left center field for his sixth home run of the season. Junior second baseman Ryan Soares followed with a two-run home run also in the first inning, giving Mason the early 3-0 advantage.
“I got a pitch and was able to put a good swing on it and help my team out. Our pitchers have been throwing so well, throwing strikes and getting it done, so I’m just trying to get my job done,” said Soares.
Soares went 2-for-3 in the game and scored three of Mason’s six runs.
Senior pitcher Mike Modica (5-1) allowed only one run on five hits while throwing seven innings.
Senior pitcher Shawn Griffith pitched two innings and struck out two batters. Despite giving up a two-run home run in the eighth inning to first baseman Robbie Monday, Griffith was effective with his breaking balls.
Even though Mason’s power bat in Krieger was held hitless in three at-bats on Saturday, the left fielder made key defensive plays in the latter part of the game. He made a diving catch to end the seventh inning and again robbed the Seahawks from a hit in the eighth inning.
“This is a huge win for us after we won on Friday and already won the series. It gives a great advantage with the momentum and it puts us in a nice place in the league right now,” said Krieger.
