Mason Holds First Lavender Graduation

By Connect2Mason Director Christian Smith

University Life’s Office of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Questioning Resources sponsored the University’s first Lavender Graduation yesterday, a ceremony celebrating the graduating seniors in the LGBTQ community.

Although this is the first ceremony of its kind at George Mason University, Lavender Graduations have been occurring around the country since 1995 when it was first initiated at the University of Michigan.

At Thursday’s ceremony, LGBTQ and ally graduating seniors and alumni were honored. Among others, Ric Chollar, associate director for LGBTQ resources, Rose Pascarell, associate vice president of University Life and an openly lesbian member of the administration, Sandy Hubler, vice president of University Life, and Brian Picone, a gay graduating senior spoke. Each spoke about the courage it took to be a LGBTQ community member, the pride they felt for the Mason's LGBTQ community and their personal commitment to and experience with it.
