Top Mason Salaries Explored

By Connect2Mason Director Christian Smith
In this era of economic difficulty, salaries of college officials are coming under increased scrutiny. Roblink provides the salary for each George Mason University employee, allowing users to search for the top Mason salaries and view a list of salaries alphabetically.

According to Roblink, the top 5 highest paid employees of Mason are:

1. Jim Larranaga: $525,000 Head Men's Basketball Coach

2. Alan Merten: $404,000 University President

3. Peter Stearns: $340,000 Provost

4. Lloyd Griffiths: $328,296 Dean of the School of Information Technology

5 Maurice Scherrens: $273,000 Senior Vice President

These salaries may seem a little more tame when compared to those of other universities. According to NCAA Hoops Today, at the University of Kentucky, basketball coach John Calipari was paid $3.96 million last year. University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III's salary was $487,000 last academic year, making him the third highest-paid public university president in the nation, according to BusinessWeek.

Merten came under fire last October when the Faculty Senate found out about a $108,000 bonus he was to receive. In the senate's November 19, 2008 meeting notes, a motion was made requesting that Merten return the bonus, which was given to him "in addition to a $21,000 (5.2 percent) base salary increase already mandated by the President's employment contract." Merten has since made no comment about the bonus but rumors have circulated that he converted the bonus into anonymous scholarships.

Because Mason is a pubic institution, salaries are available to the public. For more information about a particular employee's salary, the office of Human Resources and Payroll may be contacted.
