GMUEA: What is Happening Around You?

The George Mason University Environmental Awareness Group is an environmental activist organization whose goal is to boost awareness about environmental issues and interest in the Mason community. They have compiled a list of events that will be taking place for the remainder of the semester.

February 2008 – The Native Plants Project is back and resuming its activities this month. The first event will include the removal of some invasive plants around the campus, followed by plantings later in the semester. If you would like to join, please contact the Environmental Awareness Group at cbriede@gmu.edu.

Wednesday, Feb. 20, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in SUB I Room A. Come see a showcase of new sustainability courses and course components developed by instructors, who participated in the 2007 Sustainability Across the Curriculum faculty.

Saturday, Feb. 23, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management. Help to restore wildlife habitats and promote biodiversity in Prince William County. (703) 499-4954. 14710 Deepwood Lane, Nokesville, VA 20181.

Saturday, Feb. 23, 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. Flying Squirrels are native to northern Virginia, yet seldom seen. So, come on out and watch them feeding at the Long Branch Nature Center. $2. Registration required. (703) 228-4747. 625 S. Carlin Springs Rd, Arlington, VA 22204.

Tuesday, Feb. 26, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Birding trip with Arlington County Park Authority to Point Lookout State Park, MD. Lots of opportunities for observing waterfowl, such as loons and grebes. $20. Tuesday, Feb. 26, 7:30 p.m. Public hearing on parks, trails and open spaces in Prince William County. McCoart Government Center, 1 County Complex Ct, Woodbridge, VA 22192-9201.

Thursday, Feb. 28, 7:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Butterfly Gardening with the Washington Area Butterfly Club at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington. Free with required registration.

Wednesday, March 5, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Bird walk at Long Branch Nature Center. Free. Registration required.

Saturday, March 8, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Stream clean-ups at multiple locations in Arlington County. (703)525-0168 for more information.

Sunday, March 9, 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Woodcock Watch: Come out at dusk to see the elusive Woodcock's spring mating display featuring its distinctive spiraling flight. $20. Registration required. Meet at Lubber Run Recreation Center.
