Spring semester schedule under review for future

This semester students began school a week later in January than in the spring 2010 semester and will subsequently get out a week later in May.

The George Mason University faculty senate met today and announced they will discuss whether the current spring schedule should be changed in the future.

According to Senator Janette Muir, the Academic Policies Committee will take up the issue of recommending a new schedule.

“Some faculty [were] concerned about wasted time in January,” Muir said.

This year’s spring semester doesn’t match up with many of the other public universities in Virginia; including the University of Virginia, William and Mary and Old Dominion University.

Some members of the administration, however, cited the need for the longer winter break to handle the transition period, Muir said.

The starting date for Mason students this spring was Jan. 24 and the last exam day is May 18.

Muir encourages students to contact faculty senate about their opinions on the future spring semester calendar.
