Top That! Waffle Day
By Connect Mason Assistant Convergence Director Grace Kendall
There are few Mondays that wouldn’t benefit from free waffles. Mason students are in luck because the Student Centers are sponsoring the second annual Top That! Waffle Day on Monday, March 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Dewberry Hall.
When students arrive, they will be able to feast on free waffles with a variety of toppings including fruit, traditional syrup, and hot fudge – an addition that came from one of last year’s suggestions.
Each table will have buttons and talking pieces, including waffle recipes and the history of waffles. There will also be giveaways and waffle-inspired songs all about the glory of the square patterned breakfast cakes.
For this year, the gathering is only an hour long and encourages more communication between all of the participants.
“Last year it was longer, but we found that a lot of people came, ate and then they would leave,” said Mecca Marsh, the Associate Director of Training and Programs for the GMU Student Centers.
The idea for a waffle celebration goes much farther back than our university. There is actually a National Waffle Day (August 24) and an International Waffle Day (March 25). The holiday transitioned to a Mason celebration last year thanks to Mary Ann Grandinetta, the Assistant Director for the Freshman Center.
Grandinetta used to work in the Student Activities Office in Duchess Community College in New York, where she and her coworkers would celebrate anything that struck their fancy. Waffle Day was one such celebration, and when Grandinetta came to Mason she brought the idea with her.
The Freshman Center has put on a couple smaller waffle days of its own, but came together with the Student Centers to make the event an annual school-wide gathering.

“We got a really good response and reviews,” Marsh said of the first Waffle Day. “People really enjoyed it.”
Marsh said that the Student Centers were excited to be a part of Waffle Day because they do a lot of behind-the-scenes work on campus, and this is an opportunity to “engage with the community” and to put a face to the organization.
Mason Student Centers will be hosting the event along with The Freshman Center, Orientation Family Programs and Services, and The Office of Alcohol, Drug and Health Education. For more information, contact Marsh at mmarsh3@gmu.edu.
