Top 5 weekend picks November 15

Every week Connect2Mason will offer five entertainment picks for your weekend and week ahead. Ranging from on-campus to off-campus events, Connect2Mason's Top 5 will give you a jump start on your weekend. Here are the Top 5 picks for this weekend:

1. Lights

When: Sunday, Nov. 7 at 7pm

Where: The 9:30 Club

Lights is a one-woman dance/electro band with a sound that is definitely unique in the genre. Lights, born Valerie Anne Poxleitner, started writing her own music and lyrics in 2008. She will be performing at the 9:30 Club which won this years Club of the Year award from Pollstar Magazine. With space for 1200 people there is plenty of room to grab some friends and take a study break this weekend to check out an up-and-coming artist.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the 9:30 Club’s website, 930.com.

2. Jammin’ Java Presents Lucy Wainwright

When: Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 pm, doors open at 6pm

Where: Jammin’ Java

Lucy Wainwright comes from a prominent musical family and has toured Canada, the US and Europe with bands like Indigo Girls, Neko Case and Over the Rhine. Giving up her job as an elementary school teacher she chose to follow her musical career. Jammin’ Java is the recipient the top 100 concert venues in the United States by Pollstar Magazine and is well known in the DC area. Come out and see an artist known for fun stage presence and a great show.

Tickets are $12 and can be purchased on Jammin’ Java’s website, www.jamminjava.com.

 

3. FotoWeekDC

When: Nov. 9-18

Where: 1299 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, DC

FotoWeek is closing this weekend, so head into DC and check out a ton of photography, photojournalism, multimedia projections exhibits and even some guest speakers. The event is located at multiple venues in NW, DC.  To see all the venues and different exhibits visit www.fotoweekdc.org. Most events are free and the rest allow ticket purchase at the door.

 

4. Newseum

When: Sat, Nov. 17 and Sun, Nov. 18

Where: 555 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. Washington, DC 20001

Head over to the Office of Student Involvement (the Hub, room 2300) and pick up $10 dollar tickets for one of the best museums in DC. Tickets are normally $21.95. The Newseum has some of the best photographs and articles in the history of journalism, not to mention a chance to pretend to be a news anchor and film your own breaking story.

 

5. The Dark Knight Rises

When: Friday, Nov. 16 at 10pm and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 6pm

Where: JC Cinema

If you haven’t had the chance to go catch the final part of the Dark Knight Trilogy, now is your chance.  Starring Christian Bale as Batman and Tom Hardy as Bane, the movie is an action-packed thriller. Head over to the JC Cinema and show your Mason ID to get in for free.
