2013 Homecoming Week events preview

Homecoming is back, and this time George Mason University is all about tradition.

Mason’s Office of Student Involvement and The Alumni Association are highlighting the evolution of the university’s traditions, history, and success for this year’s homecoming week with the theme “The Evolution of Greatness”, according to their website.

Homecoming Week hosts different events each day leading up to the big homecoming basketball game.

Here are this year’s events hosted by Student Involvement and Alumni Affairs:

Change that Makes Cents: Penny Wars
When: Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. through Feb. 15 at 2 p.m.
Where: Office of Student Involvement
Teams will compete to raise the most money for their philanthropy by collecting pennies. Silver coins may be donated as well but will negate points from the buckets. The team with the most collected pennies wins the donation to benefit the charity of their choice.

Let’s Get it Started: Homecoming Tip-off
When: Feb. 11 from noon to 1 p.m.
Where: The Johnson Center Atrium
Mason athletes and students will mingle while participating in free giveaways and games, with music and refreshments provided.

Spirit Stations
When: Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. through Feb. 15 at 5 p.m.
Where: Johnson Center Kiosks
Mason spirit gear will be given out at the kiosks to rally up students in preparation for the big game.

Viva la Majesty: Mason Majesty Pageant
When: Feb. 11 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: Dewberry Hall
Mason students will compete for the pageant title by strutting down the runway in formal, swim and casual wear.

Flash Your Mason Gear
When: Feb. 12 from noon to 3 p.m.
Where: The HUB (SUB II) Ballroom
Show off your Mason spirit and gear to win free giveaways.

Peace, Love and Can-struction
When: Feb. 12 from noon to 3 pm.
Where: The HUB (SUB II) Ballroom
Teams participate in collecting non-perishable foods and construct designs using the donated cans. The cans are later donated to the local food bank.

Cosmic Disco Bowling
When: Feb. 12 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: AMF Centreville Bowling Center
Classic cosmic bowling, complete with lights and hip tunes. Student Involvement is selling tickets in their office for five dollars that include shoe rentals. Shuttles will be provided to take students to and from the bowling alley.

Mason Strikes Back – Trivia Game Show
When: Feb. 13 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: Dewberry Hall
Students may compete in a Jeopardy style trivia game testing knowledge about GMU.

90s Cartoons and Cereal Extravaganza
When: Feb. 14 from noon to 2 p.m.
Where: The Johnson Center, Patriot Corner
There will be a screening of popular cartoons from the 1990s with cereal offered to remind students of childhood Saturday mornings.

Are You iN`SYNC?
When: Feb. 14 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: Dewberry Hall
An NSYNC and Britney inspired lip-sync with costumes and dance moves encouraged.

Homecoming Pep-Rally: Reppin’ and Peppin’
When: Feb. 15 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: The Johnson Center Atrium
Support and cheer on Mason’s Men’s Basketball team the night before the game.

Catch the Mason Spirit: Capture the Flag
When: Feb. 15 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Where: The Johnson Center Atrium
Participants will meet at North Plaza then walk to a field to play a game of Capture the Flag.

Annual Homecoming Block Party
When: Feb. 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Fairfax Campus, Parking Lot K
Celebrate the fifteenth annual Homecoming Pregame Block Party featuring family-friendly tents with interactive games, arts and crafts.

Homecoming Basketball Game: George Mason University vs. Georgia State University
When: Feb. 16 at 4 p.m.
Where: The Patriot Center
The Patriots take on the Georgia State Panthers at the Patriot Center! Tickets can be found on Mason Athletics’ website or at the Patriot Center Box Office.

Fireworks Show
When: Feb. 16 at approximately 6:15 p.m.
Where: Mason Pond
To celebrate Homecoming, fireworks will be displayed after the men’s basketball game. The Office of Community Relations suggests viewing from parking lots K and A, and the Patriot Center North entrance. For safety reasons, Mason Pond Drive from Patriot Circle to the traffic circle will be closed thirty minutes prior to the show and for the remainder of the duration.

The Millennium Lounge
When: Feb. 16 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Where: The HUB (SUB II) Ballroom
The Patriots Activities Council is hosting a post-game gathering with a DJ and door prizes.
