Mason ranked among best places to work over 50

50.5 percent of Mason's full-time instructional faculty are over 50 years of age (Data provided by GMU Institutional Research and Reporting).

This hasn’t been the first time that Mason received high marks from the American Association of Retired People. The university has been a winning institution of the senior citizen advocacy group’s “50 Employers for Workers Over 50” four other times in the past six years.

Mason was among three other employers in Virginia to be recognized by the AARP, including Virginia Commonwealth University.

The university isn’t short of older-aged workers. As of 2012, 50.5 percent of Mason's full-time instructional faculty are over 50. When just considering professors, 57.8 percent are over 60 years old.

Likewise, of the 1,226 full-time instructional faculty at Mason, the average age is 50.4. The average number of years of instruction by full-time faculty is 11.5.

According to the university news service, “George Mason’s Retirement Connection program is one program that helped the university obtain its ranking of 13th in the nation for the Best Employers honor. Retirees are given a myriad of gifts upon retirement, including complimentary tickets to the Center for the Arts and to a university basketball game, a 30-day pass to the university fitness facility, and complimentary parking for one year.”
