Alcohol and Sex Don't Mix

By Connect Mason Sports Director Damien Sordelett

Alcohol has been a cause of many unpleasant mornings. Imagine waking up and not remembering exactly what happened the night before. It is not something that a student likes to have weighing him or her down.

But that's not the only way in which things can go wrong when you mix alcohol and sex.

“Another risk is drinking too much and possibly blacking out and not even knowing what you are doing,” said Mara Jacobs, a graduate intern with the Office of Alcohol, Drug and Health Education. “Not just forgetting, but just not even being in control and aware, which actually leads to possible sexual assault.”

Sexual assault can be a result of those who are unable to make a sober decision.

But that's not the end of it.

“One of the other things that is a risk with condom use and drinking and alcohol and substance abuse is that there is 12 or 20 steps to putting on a condom. And when your judgment is impaired you don’t necessarily remember all the steps,” said Rachel Lindsey, outreach coordinator of Sexual Assault Services.

Not remembering all the steps could lead to unwanted pregnancies.

And still, men have another good reason to lay off the sex while drunk. Studies have shown that men take longer to get an erection when drinking and then lose it as soon as it gets up.

So guys, next time a girl does not seem impressed, that may be a reason why.
