The Graduate Diaries
By Connect Mason Asst. News Director Rashad Mulla
The end of this semester marks the end of many George Mason Patriots’ college careers. Connect Mason caught up with the bearded trio of Daniel Hayes, Joe Scales and Farooq Yousuf to discuss their time here, their favorite professors and their future plans.
Let’s meet the soon-to-be graduates.
Daniel Hayes is a communication major who hopes to work in print journalism. He has worked with the Broadside, WGMU Radio and has interned with the BBC.
Joe Scales is an anthropology major. He hopes to get a Masters’ degree in public health and a PhD in anthropology. He presented his research at the American Anthropological Association conference in November 2007.
Farooq Yousuf is a systems engineering major. He served as the Muslim Students Association president this year. He has interned for America Online and Real Networks.
You’re graduating. How do you feel?
DH: “I’m glad to have finished my tenure here at GMU. I’m looking forward to moving on with my life and starting a career.”
JS: “I feel good. In four years, I think I’ve accomplished a lot. It’s time to move on; time to go to the next step.”
FY: “It’s a big burden off of my shoulders. [I feel] relief, joy, happiness… I can’t wait to graduate and start with life.”
Has it sunk in yet?
DH: “No it totally hasn’t. I think I’m going to have to go to convocation before I realize that I’m actually graduating. And I’m also going to have to pass my next economics exam. So hopefully it all works out and I actually do graduate.”
JS: “I’ve thought about it a little bit. Part of me wishes I could stay a little bit longer. There are things that I haven’t done yet [and] professors I haven’t taken yet.”
FY: “Not yet. When I get that degree in the mail, that’s when I’ll be like, ‘Wow, this it.’”
Who were your favorite professors at Mason?
DH: Chris Wilson, Mark Hopson (Communication) and John Farina (Religious Studies)
What are your future plans?
DH: “This summer I’m going to be doing an internship with Northern Virginia Magazine. And I think this is going to be the last of my internship days… I would like to work for a newspaper in print journalism as a foreign correspondent.”
JS: “I was recently accepted into the University of North Texas Masters’ program in applied anthropology.”
FY: “I have a job offer as a quality assurance engineer. I’ll start working full-time, get married and start life.”
What are your plans immediately following your last exam?
DH: “I’m going to Stone Hot Pizza (in Alexandria, Va.).”
JS: “Seeing as how I’ll probably have been up for four or five days, I probably will sleep for a couple of days.”
FY: “I’ll go home, relax, chill, be happy and let it sink in.”
