Iron Man: The Total Package

By Connect Mason Video Director Scott Williams

While “Iron Man” doesn’t break any new ground, it is proof that Hollywood is finally perfecting the comic book movie. This film gives fans the comedy and one-liners they wanted from “Spider-Man,” the hard-hitting action they wanted from “Hulk,” and the realism they wanted from “Fantastic Four.” Add to the mix a solid story, some amazing effects, and a hint of romance and you get the first major blockbuster of the summer.

Behind the sleek and shine that only comes with a high tech suit of armor, is a touching story about humanity and redemption. Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark/Iron Man, who while on a business trip to Afghanistan sees first hand the death and destruction caused when the weapons he designed fall into the hands of terrorists. Captured and seriously wounded, Stark’s captures force him to build them a missile. Instead, he uses the equipment provided to him to create a device to keep his damaged heart beating, and a powerful suit of armor to escape.

He gets back to America a changed man, and proclaims that he will no longer design weapons, and will instead focus only on projects to benefit the world rather than hurt it. Much to the chagrin of his business partners, who fear the coming drop in their bottom line, Stark stays true to his word. However, while in seclusion, he secretly begins working on a new, more powerful suit of armor which he intends to use to reverse the damage he has inadvertently caused, and remove his weapons from the hands of terrorists by force.

“Iron Man” is a gripping, true to life story about the evil men do, the thirst for money, and the need to find one’s purpose in life. You do not have to be a comic book fan to enjoy this movie as the story has so much to offer.

Stark could not have been better cast, as Downey brings the billionaire playboy to life with such passion and flair that there is not one dull second. Along with his too cool attitude comes great comedic timing and sassy one-liners that is sure to make this the most quotable movie of the year.

Surprisingly, there is also plenty of slapstick comedy thrown in the mix for good measure, making sure there are plenty of laughs throughout – sometimes where you least expect it.

Jeff Bridges brings the film’s villain Obadiah Stane (a.k.a. Iron Monger) to life in a truly believable way. He is more corporate evil than homicidal madman, which adds to the realism of this movie.

Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Stark’s personal secretary, brings a certain cute and lovable quality to the story as Virginia “Pepper” Potts. Her chemistry with Downey makes for some very fun scenes.

The film also stars Terrence Howard as Stark’s best friend Lt. Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, and gives a hint late in the film that we may see his superhero counterpart in the film’s sequel.

Iron Man is right up there with the Spider-Man and Batman movies as the best comic book movie ever. There is something for everyone in this smash hit, and it is not to be missed. And I won’t spoil it, but stay tuned after the credits for a huge surprise that is sure to blow you away.
