The Graduate Diaries
By Connect Mason Asst. News Director Rashad Mulla
The end of this semester marks the end of many George Mason Patriots’ college careers. Connect Mason caught up with the bearded trio of Daniel Hayes, Joe Scales and Farooq Yousuf to discuss their time here, their favorite professors and their future plans.
Hanson Comes to Northern Virginia
The trio of long-haired harmonizing brothers from the 90's known as Hanson played the State Theatre on Thursday night. Connect Mason was there to see how the band is doing a decade after their big hit, MMMBop.

Hanson Proves They're Still the Same Band
By Connect Mason Multimedia Director Grace Kendall.

MMMbop. It’s a nonsense lyric many college students remember from their middle-school days, and in 1997 the song shot the band Hanson into radio-wave stardom. Now over a decade later, the trio of brothers is playing the same kind of music to the same group of fans, including the hundreds of people who showed up on Thursday, May 1 at the State Theatre.
Devoted fans came early to participate in a mile walk with the band, an effort the brothers have created to help raise money and purchase shoes for the underprivileged in Africa. The crowd only grew from there, with a line wrapped around the building by late afternoon. Twenty-something females were decked out in their Hanson gear and sporting hand-decorated tote bags featuring song lyrics. One fan had an MMMBOP license plate tied around her waist.
Research Conference Presents Feminist Findings
By Connect Mason Multimedia Director Grace Kendall
Student researchers gathered at the first annual Gender Research Conference to present feminist findings on modern issues in dating, gender roles in on-campus organizations and the difficulties of international students at Mason, among other topics. The conference was held in Mason Hall Thursday, May 1.
All of the panelists’ findings were on different specific topics, but they came together to paint an interesting picture of the split between women as relationship-focused or career-focused.
Students Present the 'Reality' of Mason Parking
Student project by Amanda Svec and Jessica Nam
Students complain that Mason parking sucks, but what they should be saying is "I'm lazy." Mason has enough parking to accommodate everyone's parking needs, but the majority of parking is located at least a 10 minute walk away from the center of campus, according to Josh Cantor, director of Parking and Transportation Services.
"Students come to my office and complain to me everyday about how they can't find a parking spot," said Cantor, "and I point to the map of campus and inform them that there is parking and where it is available. Unfortunately it is just not convenient enough to meet their desired needs."
911 Outage Expected for Saturday
By Connect Mason Director Whitney Rhodes
Mason's 911 service will go down for a few minutes at 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, according to a Mason Alert sent out at 8:30 a.m. today. If you experience a campus emergency during that brief period, dial 703/503-9951.
This telephone outage will affect non-emergency calls to Mason police as well.
Boy Band No Longer, Hanson Takes 'The Walk'
By Connect Mason Reporter Rachael Dickson, from her Anything and Everything blog
Video shot by Dickson, edited by Video Director Scott Williams
As I sat in the main hall of the State Theater, waiting to go up to interview Hanson, I grew more and more nervous. I hadn't ever interviewed a big celebrity group like Hanson before - the closest would probably be the politicians I've spoken to. And for a girl whose first CD ever (in fourth grade) was Hanson's major label debut, "Middle of Nowhere," getting to meet them was like, a dream come true.
- Please continue reading for more video footage of my encounter with the band.
