Patriots Start Undefeated In Baseball

The Patriots soar undefeated this weekend in the beginning of a potentially solid baseball season.

After committing an error, which resulted in an unearned run, in the bottom of the sixth inning, second baseman Ryan Soares belted a three-run home run in the seventh inning as the George Mason Patriots (1-0) won their 2009 season opener over the USC Upstate Spartans 11-5 in Spartanburg, S.C.
Body Image Awareness Week at Mason

There is always someone checking the fat grams and calories on food before it is eaten, going to the gym several times a day or checking their weight every morning. The average college student typically has an interest in refining one’s body or struggles to keep up with the acceptable body image of peers.
“Both boys and girls are exposed to negative body images and body expectations from the media and these images can create unhealthy and unrealistic expectations for their own body ideals,” said Danielle Lapierre, the assistant director of the Office of Alcohol, Drug and Health Education.
Merten Announces Assistance Fund

In an e-mail sent to the George Mason University community late Thursday night, University President Alan Merten announced the establishment of a $150,000 Adverse Economy Assistance Fund for students whose family’s economic situation have been “dramatically weakened” by the economic crisis.
The fund is to be used by the Office of Financial Aid in conjunction with other available assistance. Merten says he is hopeful the fund will help students who are debating between continuing their studies and withdrawing enrollment at the university.

Spring Baseball Fever '09

The George Mason baseball team opens their season this weekend in Spartanburg, S.C. as they take on the USC Upstate Spartans, UNC Asheville Bulldogs, and the SIU Edwardsville Cougars. Southpaw Mike Modica, who led Mason with 78 strikeouts last season, is one of seven seniors on the 35-man roster.
The Patriots battle the host Spartans on Friday. The Spartans had a 17-8 home record last season despite posting a 25-29 overall record. Senior catcher Phillip Morgan will be one of the team’s key returning players as he finished second on the team with four home runs and 34 RBIs.
Basketball BracketBuster Impact

The George Mason University men’s basketball team will play against the Creighton Bluejays at 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 on ESPNU as a part of ESPN’s BracketBusters series.
The Bluejays are 20-6 overall and 10-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference with their most notable win against Dayton, who beat the Patriots 66-62 earlier this season. Mason played Creighton in November of 2005 and 2006. Creighton won both of those games, the first by 20 in Fairfax and the second by two in Omaha.

Mikhail Gorbachev to Give Keynote Address at Cold War Conference
Former Soviet President and Nobel Laureate Mikhail Gorbachev will deliver the keynote address of a conference on the Cold War on Tuesday, March 24, at 8 p.m. at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall.
The conference, “1989: Looking Back, Looking Forward,” will explore the historical implications of the end of the Cold War, as well as how its lessons should be applied to promote peace and international cooperation in years to come.
