Alice Walker visits Mason for Fall for the Book
|There are many novels that capture an audience’s attention. Works such as “The Great Gatsby” and “The Giver” are often read in high school and college literature classes because of their wide acceptance in the literary world. The novel “The Color Purple” is no exception. Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, author Alice Walker’s work continues to have a deep impact on readers alike, even thirty years after it was first published.
"Take Back the Night" event sponsors raise concerns over keynote speaker
|This year’s Take Back the Night event features a speaker whose selection has raised eyebrows amongst the event’s sponsors.
“Take Back the Night is a rally and march celebrating survivors of sexual violence and their allies,” said Brittany Owen, president of the Feminist Student Organization in an email. “It’s a Mason tradition going back 22 years as part of Turn Off the Violence Week.”
COLUMN: 'New' refs are superstars after new deal
|Referees have always been sport’s whipping boys—the scapegoat one minute and virtually nonexistent the next. However, Thursday night in Baltimore in a game between the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens, the referees were treated like royalty. Like Mick Jagger and the Stones running out onto a stadium stage, Gene Staratore and crew were welcomed to thousands of cheers and applause at M&T Bank Stadium.

Women's tennis prepares for weekend Mason Invitational
|This weekend the George Mason University women’s tennis team will host the Mason Invitational at the RAC courts against both Georgetown University and Mount St. Mary’s University. The invitational was set to start on Friday, but Virginia State withdrew resulting in the action starting Saturday morning against Mount St. Mary’s.
After their recent success in the Mary Washington King-Off Classic (18-9 in match play), the Patriots enter the weekend with a wave of momentum.
OPINION: Kaine empathizes with American people, Allen falls short
|The very fact that George Allen has primarily run his campaign touting his record and credentials as a responsible “fiscal conservative” is perhaps the most ridiculous assertion I have heard all campaign season, and that is saying something. The best comparable analogy would be General Pinochet boasting about his stellar human rights record. As is often the case in politics, Allen’s rhetoric about being such an ardent deficit hawk simply fails to match reality.
OPINION: Why Allen is the better choice for United States Senate
|As George Allen recently said in his debate against Tim Kaine, “will we continue to decline, or ascend again?” These are words which frequently resonate in the heads of concerned Americans. The national debt has been rising at a historic rate and unemployment has been high for the last few years. Speaking as a college student, I feel that it is important to look at the state of our economy as we will soon be searching through the job market.
Prince William campus gets first executive officer
|After years of expansion at the George Mason University Prince William campus, Mason has hired its first executive to oversee operations and ongoing changes to the campus.
In the middle of rush-hour traffic, Annie Hunt Burriss had much to say about her new home at the university.
"I'm ready to work hard," Burriss said in a phone interview. "I'm going to create an environment where people can succeed and be happy and innovative."
