OPINION: Study strategies that might surprise you
|Final exams are just around the corner. This time of year can be blissful or agonizing. Some students may be blessed with a reduced exam load, while others are trying to resolve any exam time conflicts. There will be plenty of stress in dealing with final exams. However, the key to finishing the semester well is having a finals week game plan.
Here are some useful strategies inspired by Cal Newport’s book How to Become a Straight- A Student.
Sodexo and other company present competing visions for Mason Dining
|Two dining companies, Sodexo and Chartwells, gave bid presentations on Dec. 5 outlining each company’s vision for the dining future they would offer at George Mason University.
Dining contracts last five years, and include a renewal option at the end of agreement. Sodexo’s contract expires this January.

Mason senior wins international science essay contest
|Karl Haislmaier, a George Mason University senior physics major, won $25,000 in an international science essay contest in October 2012.
Haislmaier’s essay, entitled The Emergence of Complexity in the Universe as Viewed from a Holistic Perspective, won second place in the New Cosmic Frontiers astronomy essay contest.

OPINION: How do we communicate tragedy to children?
|The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the principal of Sanders Corner Elementary School in Ashburn was struck by a vehicle while out walking in the neighborhood around the school and listening to music through headphones. Hit by a teen driving a Dodge Durango, Kathleen Hwang was pronounced dead later that afternoon at an area hospital.
Mason officials address student concerns about mold in dorms
|On Dec. 5, university officials met with students to discuss concerns about heightened levels of mold in the Commonwealth and Dominion dormitories.
“There are a lot of rumors going around the halls about mold,” said Chad Fehr, assistant director for resident life in the Rappahannock neighborhood. “We wanted to make sure we address this issue right off the bat.”
Word of mold-related illnesses began early in the week, when some students reported that others were going to the hospital in response to high levels of mold in their rooms and bathroom.
De-stress over finals
|As the end of the semester approaches, assignments start to pile up, and the annual “De-Stress” events begin to pop up all over the Mason campus. By now, students are beginning to feel the stress that accompanies the final exam period. However, stress and anxiety don’t have to be hallmarks of the season. Here are a few ways to ease the tension and stress you may be feeling:
Wright's season-high 23 points leads the Patriots to 74-63 home win against UMBC
|Sherrod Wright had not had a dunk all season before last night’s game against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
With the ball on the right wing, Wright saw an open lane to the basket and he took it. As he broke baseline, UMBC forward Brett Roseboro slid over to help and Wright took flight. With authority, the junior guard slammed home a thunderous dunk on the 6’10” Roseboro while drawing the foul.
