OPINION: The five most often committed syllabus week crimes

Last week, we were all blessed with one of the best weeks of the semester: syllabus week.

Syllabus week is the one wondrous week in a semester where the student body is free of homework, and students can enjoy the free time to do whatever we please. However, this week is not perfect. With the good comes the bad, and rest of this column will be dedicated to the heinous crimes that some of you might have committed on multiple occasions—the five most often committed syllabus week crimes.

On Friday, January 4, President Ángel Cabrera announced Jennifer Davis as the new senior vice president for finance and administration at George Mason University.

Mason observatory to hold public stargazing sessions

George Mason University’s astronomy observatory is holding informal stargazing sessions this semester for all members of the public.

The monthly event, “Evenings under the Stars,” includes viewings through the observatory’s telescope and discussions from speakers on different topics.

“We have had scientists from all fields speak, although most are astronomy related topics,” Harold Geller, the observatory director, said in an email.

Mason men's basketball falls to Northeastern, 71-51 in largest loss of the season

Riding a three-game winning streak, the Mason men's basketball team traveled to Boston, Mass. with the intent to push their streak to four. However, the Northeastern Huskies had other plans. 

In a mostly dominating performance, the Huskies trounced the Patriots 71-51 on Sunday night to move to 8-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. 

Nobel-winning economics professor passes away

On Jan. 9, James Buchanan, a Mason professor emeritus and Nobel Prize winning economist, passed away at the age of 93 in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he lived.

Buchanan was the founder of Mason's Center of Study of Public Choice, which he founded at Virginia Tech in 1969 and relocated to Mason in 1983. He received the Nobel Prize in 1986 for his work on Public Choice theory. After retiring in 1999, Buchanan continued to serve as advisory general director for Center of Study of Public Choice until his death.
