LETTER TO THE EDITOR: James Buchanan and his legacy in economics

Over winter break I was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. James Buchanan. I would like to offer condolences to Betty Tillman, his secretary of over fifty years.

As Mason’s first Nobel laureate, winning the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1986, he put the university and its economics program on the map. Buchanan’s work was groundbreaking and has inspired countless colleagues and students. He leaves behind a prolific list of books and papers that he authored as a testament to his work ethic and remarkable mind.

Art exhibit draws on themes of time

This past Thursday, nine different artists filled the Fine Art Gallery in the Art and Design Building with their drawings. In an exhibit entitled Draw(n) Out, these artists showcased their work focused on the theme of time. Draw(n) Out’s purpose was to push the boundaries of the ideas people have about drawing.

Women's basketball falls to James Madison, 71-55 in lopsided home loss

Despite putting in an impressive first half display and registering 21 bench points on the night, the George Mason University women’s basketball team suffered a lopsided home loss, falling 71-55 to Colonial Athletic Association rival James Madison University.

Senior guard Rahneeka Saunders was the only player who scored in double figures for the Patriots (6-11, 1-5 CAA), registering 14 points and eight rebounds. Saunders was supported by reserves junior Janaa Pickard and senior Melissa Collier, who each scored nine points.

The story behind Mason's founding: the college is established

The following piece is the second of a four-part series on the history of George Mason University. The information and research in this article is based off of “George Mason University: A History,” a project created by University Libraries’ Special Collections & Archives department. The first part of the series is available here.

Q&A: Local musican Gideon Grove comes to Fairfax's Jammin' Java

Whenever I begin interviews, I never start with the first question. Instead,  the interview starts with research. In this case listening to Gideon Grove’s new album “Wildfires” (available on iTunes) which was released in November 2012 was my research. Grove will be performing on Friday, January 25 at Fairfax’s Jammin’ Java at 8 p.m.

OPINION: Frank Ocean and the redefining of masculinity

The metro coughed its final route back to its Vienna/George Mason University stop as a friendly handrested on my shoulder. Yo what’s up, Lauren?! Shocked to hear my name in such a busy, faceless rush, I pulled a blaring earphone from my ear.

Every week Connect2Mason will offer five entertainment picks for your weekend and week ahead. Ranging from on-campus to off-campus events, Connect2Mason's Top 5 will give you a jump start on your weekend. Here are the Top 5 picks for this weekend:

Open mic night series gets new location

Since its opening in November 2012, The Ridge, located between the Sandbridge and Blue Ridge dorms, has served as a study lounge and a place for students to relax and interact with one another.

The Ridge has served as a prime location for a wide range of functions and activities due to its size and convenient location in the Rappahannock neighborhood.

This semester The Ridge will begin to host as an open mic venue for Mason students.

Mason Police engage in crisis training

There was a hypothetical shooting last week at the George Mason Campus. This imaginary shooter opened fire in the concourse of the patriot center, no count of the wounded as yet. Police engaged the “shooter” and local Fire and Rescue squads immediately evacuated the victims to nearby hospitals.
