OPINION: Career politicians pose a problem for the American democratic system

One of the things about Mason that I have always enjoyed is the political activity and enthusiasm of its students. Though Mason’s proximity to Washington D.C. may be a cause for this involvement, I also believe that a lot of it has to do with the students and faculty alike—they are passionate about politics, protecting their values and promoting the issues that they find important. GMU has a thriving student population of which many members are majoring in government and international politics. Some of them, although pursuing majors in other fields, also intend to work for the government. I am included in the latter population; however, one of the things I have commonly heard on campus terrifies me greatly: “When I finish school, I want to be a politician.”

Lady Patriots open three-game home stand with 60-51 loss to Northeastern Huskies

It was a frigid night outside and inside the Patriot Center on Tuesday night, as the Patriots went cold and fell to the Northeastern University Huskies, 60-51.

The Patriots (6-10,1-4) were off to a blistering start, capitalizing on early jumpers thanks to weaknesses in the Huskies 2-3 zone. Senior guard Rahneeka Saunders, who finished with 17 points and five assists, led Mason to a 15-8 lead after six minutes of play.

However, the Huskies (11-6, 4-2) quickly used their size advantage down low and fought back to tie the game just three minutes later.

[PREVIEW] Mason travels to Towson to face the surprising second-ranked Tigers

When the official 2012-2013 game schedule was announced before the start of the season, the Towson matchup seemed like an easy win and a game that the George Mason University men’s basketball team would surely take lightly. After all, the Tigers have been abysmal over the past few seasons, finishing in the cellar of the Colonial Athletic Association. At this point in the season, however, the Tigers are 10-10, 5-2 in conference competition and ranked in the CAA. When Mason travels to face the Tigers Wednesday night at 7 p.m. they need to take them seriously.
