Mason falls in finale to VCU's pressure

Unable to break the Rams' defensive pressure or claw back from a double-digit first-half deficit, the Patriots fell 77-89 to VCU in their final game of the regular season.

Patriots look to bounce back at VCU from loss in season finale

Head coach Paul Hewitt made it clear that his team had one goal in mind for the regular season: to win the conference.

That is no longer possible.

With the 85-82 overtime loss at Northeastern Wednesday evening, George Mason (23-7) dropped to 14-3 in the CAA, tied for second with VCU and one game back of Drexel. With the Mason loss, Drexel has clinched first place in the conference and the top seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.

Will the real Mason Nation please stand up? [OPINION]

With 10 seconds left on the clock, the Rams were shooting free throws to add to their lead. The student section always stands during games, but at this point, they were urging the rest of Mason Nation (ironically, the fans who had to pay to be there) to join them.

“Stand up!” *Boom Boom* “Stand up!” *Boom Boom*

Mason alum Griffith talks life in the Minors

Many student-athletes crave the chance to pursue a professional playing career in their respective sports post-graduation, yet few ultimately adhere to that burning desire.

Shawn Griffith, however, did not shy away from the challenge and chose to chase his lifelong dream.

Griffith, a 2009 graduate from George Mason University, is a relief pitcher in the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization. The 24-year-old St. Petersburg, Fla. native was selected in the 37th round in the 2009 Major League draft, one of six Mason graduates to get drafted that year.

Moton goes for 31 as women's hoops downs Georgia State in overtime

When the women’s basketball team needed an answer, they knew right where to look.

As the clock winded down in overtime, Taleia Moton sank two free throws to give George Mason a 70-68 win at the Patriot Center Sunday afternoon over Georgia State.  Moton ended the game with 31 points. The win comes on the 38th anniversary of Mason’s first ever win as a women’s basketball program and brings head coach Jeri Porter to within three wins of the 200 benchmark.

The Patriots sneak by Lamar on Senior Night

“The emotions have been running high for me all day,” said Pearson after the game. “You know this is big time, I’ve been here a long time, I feel like I’ve been through a lot with this team.”

Sherrod Wright beats VCU at the buzzer

There are 3.8 seconds left on the clock, the Patriots trailing by two. Ryan Pearson has the ball at the baseline looking for Bryon Allen, but he gets cut off. About to fall over the line, Pearson tosses with the ball to the only open target – Sherrod Wright.

Wright takes three dribbles. He pulls up for the jumper with a hand right in his face.

Swish. 62-61.

“I made the shot of my dreams,” Wright said.

February 14 goes by many names for students. For many, it's Valentine's Day. For some, it's Singles Awareness Day, Hallmark Day or V-Day. This year, for the Mason Nation, V-day might carry a whole new name: VCU Day.
