B-Boys & Girls Hold Event to Build Community
By Connect Mason Assistant Life Director Cheryl Jones
George Mason’s B-boy club, Breakfamous, is hosting Breakin' Hearts, a breakdancing battle event, this Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. in the Sub II Ballroom.
Breakfamous aims to bring the local breakdancing community together. Every other month the club tries to hold a skill-based dance competition for the students at Mason as well as the b-boys and b-girls in the NOVA community.
“If we had more Mason students it would not only help our club but it would get Mason more involved," Waldemar Bernedo, former Breakfamous president. "Our club is too young right now but for the future we hope we will be able to set ourselves more in stone to do what we wanted with Breakfamous at Mason.”
Not only is breakdancing a passion for the members of this club, but certain members are trying to help find a place to dance for kids in high school. Certain schools have banned breakdancing, believing it poses a possible danger to the kids.
“Breakfamous wants to go and help others; to inspire others to dance,” said Bernedo. Members of the club have taught a breakdancing class for younger kids in DC and other schools in the Metro area.
Breakfamous intends to hold performances and battles with other off-campus crews since a large amount of their crowds come from other states then Virginia. During some of their previous events at Mason, breakdancers along the east coast came to watch and participate.
Breakin' Hearts participants will be charged $5 for admission but the winner will be awarded a $200 prize.
