Islamic Awareness Week Ends With Some Heroes

By Connect Mason Reporter Edwin Mora

The Muslim Student Association concluded Islam Awareness Week yesterday evening with an event called "Heroes," which focused on pointing out traits of a few Islam scholars.

Shaykh Safi Khan was the guest speaker who pointed out the traits of the scholars, whom he referred to as “pious predecessors” of the Islam faith.

“The goal is to see what we can do to practice what they practice,” said Khan, “And to feel the passion that they felt for Islam.”

The character of the pious predecessors, according to Khan, included strong Imam [faith], unselfishness, concern with the “hereafter”, humbleness, avoiding conflict, fear of Allah, and placing Islam above all material things.

Umar Bin Khattab, Abdallah, Ali Bin Abu Talib, and Abu Bakr were among the scholars mentioned by Khan.

According to Senior Adil Minha, an Information Systems major, Khan is a well known motivational speaker in Maryland who “has a lot of knowledge,” of Islam. Minha is the MSA officer who with the help of other members organized the event.

There was a Q and A session at the end of the event where attendees asked questions about what it takes to be a good Muslim. After the session, there was pizza and refreshments. About 60 people attended.
