Mason’s New Face: Gunston No Longer on Sidelines

According to Press Secretary Dan Walsch of George Mason University, the unveiling of GMU’s new mascot will be at the Brown vs. GMU Men’s Basketball game on Monday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. at the Patriot Center. “We're very excited about it,” said Walsch. “Just keep in mind that we are not getting rid of Gunston. Gunston is simply taking on a new role.”
Sports Blogger Dan Steinberg of WashingtonPost.com said that “the school won't identify the new mascot, although an athletic department spokeswoman described it as “closer to a person than to a muppet.” Ryan Kish, alumnus George Mason Basketball blogger, speculates an actual Patriot or Patriot-like character as the new face of George Mason.
The change of a mascot has been in the works for sometime now. But did you know that Mason’s mascot hasn’t always been the furry Gunston that we know and love? According to an article in Mason Spirit, GMU’s magazine for Alumni and friends, mason’s mascot wasn’t always green. Check out photos of previous GMU mascots.
