The men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to conference rival William and Mary at George Mason stadium in front 827 fans.
The William & Mary Tribe snapped the Patriots four-game winning streak 31 seconds into the first sudden-death overtime. Price Thomas, the Tribe’s junior midfielder, scored the game- winning goal on a breakaway from the right side past diving goalie Sean Kelley.
Thomas is from Charlottesville, Virginia and attended Albemarle High School.
During the previous four-game winning streak, Mason outscored opponents 9-1, including three shutout victories against Richmond and Saint Joseph’s, and a 2-1 win over Colonial Athletic Association rival Virginia Commonwealth last week.
The Patriots out shot the Tribe 17 to 13, but were unable to score past sophomore goalie Andrew McAdams. “Every game you don’t win is disappointing,” said Mason’s junior goalkeeper Sean Kelley. Sean Kelley recorded five saves in the loss including several intercepted crosses and a late diving save in the 73rd minute to keep the score even. When asked how to explain Mason’s tough defense and good start, Kelley said, “They say good defense is good offense. Unfortunately, tonight we defended more than we wanted to.” Kelley strives to match or beat last year’s record and looks forward to the CAA tournament in November. The team’s defense is anchored by senior defender and captain, Jonathon Borrajo, who shut down the Tribe’s offense and got involved in the wing attack. The team’s hot streak has seen strong play by freshman Draymond Washington and redshirt sophomore Irvin Martinez. Washington leads the team with seven points, including two goals and three assists. Martinez has also scored two goals thus far. “Draymond and Irvin are both real good players,” said coach Andrulis. Andrulis feels the team chemistry and his fast players have really contributed to the success of the season thus far. The team’s eight remaining games are all against CAA division opponents leading up to the beginning of the conference tournament in early November.
The Patriots find themselves with an impressive 5-3-1 overall record and 1-1 in the CAA. Mason travels to play Towson in Maryland on Wednesday.
