Dev and Tyler to Appear on What's Up Weekend
For anyone who has read the comments on this episode of "What's Up Weekend?" you'll be happy to hear that Dev and Tyler have agreed to sit down with Christian and me this Sunday (April 19th) to discuss their campaign, their administration, and their response to this show.
That means we need your help! Christian and I want your suggestions for questions for our next Student Body President and Vice President. We already have some questions planned, but we want to make sure we address what you want to hear. Let us know. Comment back or send an email to me or Christian!
Thanks and happy listening!
I know my opinion doesn't matter, but...
Really. I don't see any of this whole "attacking a campaign" to be ethical, especially when all the candidates agreed to not "bash other candidates", yet we have these soundclips from the podcasts... So people uninvolved with the campaign are allowed to go all out with a specific campaign?
I don't agree that it was a good move to not involve yourself with Matt Loffman or Romano's show. If I had my way, I would have wanted all the candidates to be on YourTalk, but then again, you don't want something to slip (like a subtle reference to your campaign as compared to another) and have a candidate have the soundbite to use against you, right?
My argument is that people need to lay off these guys, I mean, come on. Let the votes for them and their personal actions against the students speak for themselves.
Oh, and I'll say it again: YourTalk is a GOOD show, but I might be biased, because I consider Romano a friend of mine. There's always a follow-up interview, too.
Hey "stratospherikal," Thank
Hey "stratospherikal,"
Thank you very much for your kind words they are really apperciated. Thanks for listening the show it's great to hear. You say I'm a friend, but I don't know who you are, at least by your user name? Who are you? haha.
But anyway in response to the fact that we're attacking a campaign, I really don't think we are, I'm just attacking the campaign's character and exposing them. I mean the students, who are the voters, have the right to voice their opinions, but I see your point. But yea your right enough is enough, it's almost over. Thanks again for your support of the show its really great to hear. Keep on listening!
Positive Patriot Pledge
The Positive Patriot Pledge:
A Petition for All Candidates for Student Government
In past Student Government elections, many involved and on the sidelines noted the periodic vitriol and personal attacks by campaigns against one another; however, the focus of debate should lie in the many key issues crucial to student life, both academic and extracurricular, which are relevant to the entire student body. This year, as the campaigns prepare for the debate and the entire campaign, it is our hope that they aspire and seek to raise the level of discourse and debate, especially as they hope to represent the interests of the student body before the powers that be.
We, who sign this document, hereby agree to the following,
1. That when campaigning for the votes of the student body there will be an absence of personal attacks against other campaigns, people who work in these campaigns, and the candidates at the apex of these campaigns.
2. Personal attacks include defamation, slander, and libel, material posted online or offline, which do not focus on the issues but rather on the moral characters of others.
3. Attacks on other campaigns that do not involve sound or irrefutable evidence, that do not speak of matters relevant to campus life, or the problems or issues the campus faces, should not be engaged in.
4. As student leaders, all those involved in the Student Government elections should seek to keep excellent and respectable treatment of their peers, before, during, and after the campaign, regardless of who wins or loses.
* * * *
This is what I'm referring to. I suspect that everyone who is involved with the Student Government elections would at least know of it.
There's always next year, this year things may have gotten carried away.
That was created and intended
That was created and intended to imply to the candidates. This was formulated by Ravi Udeshi, a fellow Senator of mine in Student Government. It's a great idea and something I have, at least I think, abided by. I'm wearing a different hat in this conversation. I'm wearing the hat of the student journalist.
This pledge should be introduced as a resolution that the Student Government should support next year. It was a great idea. I'm still wondering who you are!
Oh.. and...

Not suprised Dev and Tyler
Not suprised Dev and Tyler didn't respond. Just shows how they would represent the students. It's sad because they seem like good candidates, but this is a huge turn off for me.
Great show as always Matt and Christian.
Christian, you should really vote and let your voice be heard.

I disagree
In the long history of the world, there has never been any correlation between a leader not choosing to do an interview, and his ability to lead.
You can spin our intent not to do interviews any way you want, but the bottom line is, Dev and I are driven to help the students of this university.
If you, or any student wants to talk to me directly about our ability to "represent the students" I'd be more than happy to chat with you on my cell phone at 703-717-8511.

Tyler
response to tyler
Tyler,
I see your point that you don't need to do an interview to show you can lead, but what this does is show that you cannot take the questions from student talk show hosts like Matt and I. How are you going to be able to take unscripted questions from students or administrators if you get elected? Are you going to ask them to send you questions in advanced so you don’t have to answer them on the spot?
Personally, I do not need to talk to you directly, but these interviews were a fair way for you to get out to the students. It was to show them "directly" that you can answer the tough questions on the spot, just like you would be doing if you get elected and just like all of the other candidates did. You and Dev are very strong and very good candidates. Don't get me wrong, both of you are very intelligent and you have some good ideas. I am not questioning your drive; I'm just questioning how you would do in office.
To respond to your comment that we’re “spinning” things, we’re not at all; we are giving cold hard facts. Your campaign manager told you not to do the interview from what my sources have told me. If I spun anything, then you should specifically respond to whatever I have spun. I read our email correspondents verbatim on my show, "Your Talk." So I don't know how much there is to spin when you read something verbatim. The voters can choose for themselves what it means to not show up to a couple of unscripted interviews. Especially when you say that you would accept questions from me if I send them to you, not if you come down to my studio on the spot. Your campaign didn't even have the respect to respond to Matt's request which really isn't right. I thank you for at least responding to my emails.
Cheers,
Alex
To Truly Achieve Your Campaign Objectives...
I find several flaws in your argument about not wanting to do interviews. If your 3 values truly are transparency, outreach, and action, it would make sense for you to do as many interviews as possible. You have nothing to lose with doing interviews. It gets your message out to the student body - making your campaign more transparent, reaching out to student groups, and taking action.
If you were more in tune with what students and student government need, you would realize that students need leaders who will advocate for them in the Mason community. It just seems that at a time when student government is misunderstood, you as a person hoping to lead the students would want to make students more aware about student government activities.
And what I think I found most problematic was your response to requests for interviews (or lack of response). It seems to me that it's difficult to represent students if you do not respond to emails. Even a response saying that you didn't want to do an interview would be better. If you win this election and President Merten tries to contact you to discuss something vital to students' needs, I only hope you would be more willing to respond and cooperate.
While I dispute your premise that "In the long history of the world, there has never been any correlation between a leader not choosing to do an interview, and his ability to lead," at the university level, a large part of the role of student body President is to represent students and inform them about your decisions and activities. What better way than to do an interview?
-Matt Loffman
To "Truly" Achieve Your Campaign objectives
Please don't offer us campaign advice on reaching out to students. We have been out there, day and night speaking with people. Where was everyone else tonight at 11:30 PM.? We go directly to the students, and that is the ONLY "truly" effective way to reach out. Interviews are good, but give me statistics, how many people outside of the current student government/ mason media bubble listen to your programming?
"What better way then an interview?" heck a lot of ways. This is nothing personal, but I truly know 0 on-campus residents who listen to your show. So what audience, from a broad scale is listening to these interviews?
You say interviews reach out to student groups? I SAY, WHICH ONES?
You say we have nothing to lose from interviews. I SAY WHAT DO WE "TRULY" HAVE TO GAIN? (Out of the hundreds of people I talked to over the past few days, 0 said, I can't believe you didn't do the interview, or that candidate made a great point) Oh except the co-host, who seems like a very nice girl.
You define the student body president/VP roles as to represent students and inform them about your decisions and activities. Which hasn't been done in the past. Moreover, if you think interviews are the best for doing that, then you better revamp your shows marketing strategy, reach out to MANY more people.
regards,
Tyler

Trust me, I am not offering you campaign advice, I'm just saying your decision not to participate shows your character in not being able to answer the tough questions. You seemed to get quite defensive, to say the least, which is immature and unprofessional.
Also, dissing out student media isn't the way to go. It’s actually REALLY stupid. I didn’t diss you out? A lot of people are in that student media/student government bubble. I just stated facts and I even gave you some compliments.
I don't know how many people listen to my show, but it is respectable enough (and it's Co-hosted by a respected communications Professor by the way) to get the top administrators of the University to come on, all who have accepted my requests. They felt it was a good outlet to get out to the students, but what do they know, you probably know better than them…I think I’m crazy?? Like I said during my show, you are the only ones to deny my request, which is funny.
As you might realize, all of the other candidates responded my request and Matt’s. All of them actually accepted. During the yelling, defensive rant you posted, you did not, and you still have yet to respond as to why you never even responded to Matt's request. During your attack on student media and my show you also have yet to respond to the fact that you can't answer the tough questions on the spot. I mean I don’t know. You responded to everything else?
Like I said, which I don’t think you read, I am not attacking your drive on reaching out to the students whatsoever, or the way you go about doing that. I am attacking the fact that you just can’t answer the tough questions from Matt and I on the spot. Don’t tell me you denied our requests because you didn’t have 10 minutes. I mean people close to your campaign think your decision was stupid. You don’t need statistics as a reason for you to go somewhere and do an interview. You’re not running for the United States Senate or for the Office of the President of the United States of America. That’s stupid, take PR 101. You failed.
And what do you have to say to the people who are responding saying that you've lost their votes?
Cheers,
Alex
You really did...
just lose my vote. You must be the biggest idiot in the world to attack the media during your election and personally I don't want an idiot running SGA. How dare you criticize their marketing. I live on campus and I have not seen you or your running mate around campus. I'm not saying you're not out there but I will say that I've seen every other candidate except you two, how is that for marketing? I honestly thought you guys had an interesting platform but you truly have let your true colors come out.
I was rather offended that you didn't do the interview or even tell anyone that you didn't want to do the interview. More people check this site than you think. So not doing the interview was bad enough but then you get on a public forum and make a complete fool of yourself. Nice going and don't make plans for an election party.
As for who's listening
This post is actually one of the most popular on the site right now. So regardless of your decision not to give an interview, please know that people are listening, and you have now discounted everyone who might have been interested in hearing your views in such a form.
And I do know several listeners who are on-campus residents, for the record.
So when you run out of excuses...
...you resort to attacking the show?
Nice. Real mature.
If you're a student on Mason's campus, where any number of students may not be around to hear your campaigning, you should take every opportunity to reach out.
How many non-residential students who are on campus once or twice a week could you reach out to that you haven't had the chance to speak to personally? Just because you haven't heard anything doesn't mean it's not on people's minds.
And don't tell me you could possibly speak to the entire student body in your short campaign time. Statistically speaking, it's virtually impossible.
You just lost votes by pulling this stunt, silly boy
Whether you think people pay attention to Student Media or not, whether you think it's a flawed system or not, you have to face the fact that you just pissed off at least a few people that come to this site.
And considering you're running for an office that oh, was won last year by NINE VOTES, it appears that your strategy of not responding to this at all, as opposed to taking the measly half hour that you could have spent talking to these people, could lose you just enough votes to completely screw you over. As opposed to the national election, in this election every vote really does make a difference.
Oh and insulting people in Student Media is REALLY not the way to go- do you have any idea how many people are really involved and passionate about this organization? Dumb idea. Reallllyy dumb.
I'm not in student media
I am on Connect2Mason almost every day. I listen to What's Up Weekends. I am also resident student here at mason who voted.
Nice to meet you
Now you have met someone who listens to these interviews, don't assume things.
You still don't have my vote.
And I'd also like to add, I haven't met any of the candidates campaigning in person, including yourself, I think one of my roommates has (out of six of us). Out of my boyfriend's 4 roommates and their girlfriends, none of us have met you either... they also get a lot of their information from connect2mason about what we'll do on campus....
Dev/Tyler
I must agree, one of the major issues at hand for me in the election is the fact that I have no idea what Student Government has been up to, all of the candidates I listened to were concerned with this. By not responding at all, or even releasing a press statement to put with this interview, you have made me wonder whether you will be able to be more in the open if you were to be elected.
Certainly I could understand being swamped with schoolwork or whatever else may have come up, but these are the same things that would come up if you were elected, if you can't deal with it now, how would you deal with it then? That's really the only reason I could imagine not responding to an email from someone who is very able to promote your campaign, and put you in touch with folks like me, the folks who are going to vote for you. Not Joe Plumber, but Jane Psych or John Business.
Also, I still have issues with the Dev/Tyler campaign stapling flyers to trees, I'm not entirely sure why, but this just ticked me off, it damages the trees, and litters the ground when they blow away.
Prove me wrong...
But I feel a dark cloud of doom hovering.
