Gunston Hall: a visit to the past

In celebration of George Mason’s 285th birthday, Connect2Mason trekked down to Mason Neck, Va. and visited the home of our university’s namesake.

Located on a peninsula overlooking the Potomac River, George Mason had William Buckland, an indentured servant from England and by modern standards, an architect, construct Gunston Hall in 1755.

The house was built in typical Georgian style, meaning that symmetry and balance was desired above all other architectural aspects. Currently the home, museum, cemetery, gardens and outbuildings occupy just 500 acres of the original estate’s 5,500 acres.

In the above video, shot and edited by C2M’s George Yanez, C2M Senior News Editor Yasmin Tadjdeh and Jordan Fraiser toured the grounds of the estate.

>> More George Goodness: Connect2Mason will continue to celebrate Mason's birthday throughout the week with special George Mason themed content, as well as participate in the George Mason's 285th Birthday Celebration party on Thursday. The event, sponsored by the Office of Student Media as well as other university partners, will have games, prizes and birthday cake, and feature guest speakers such as GMU President Alan Merten.

The event will be from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and will be in the Patriot’s Lounge of Student Union Building I.
