"Eats a jab to the nose, and then another, followed by a straight right to the jaw." The punishment accumulates as the boxing ring turns into a war zone. When all hope is lost, he unleashes a furious hook to end his opponent. In the end, heart and toughness come out on top.

Almost everyone is familiar with the iconic “Rocky” movie franchise. The familiar storyline always revolves around Rocky’s will to win and refusal to give up. But what many people do not know is that Rocky is based on a real person.

Chuck Wepner is a former heavyweight boxer who inspired Sylvester Stallone’s silver screen boxing phenomenon. Known as one of the toughest fighters in competition, Wepner combined an iron chin with an aggressive boxing style throughout his 51 professional fights. The Bayonne Brawler, as he was known, even lasted 15 grueling rounds with Muhammad Ali.

I'm the last few months ESPN directed a documentary in their renowned series "30 for 30" on the story behind Chuck Wepner. Recently WGMU's Sportsbreak caught up with Wepner to talk the sport of boxing and its evolution over the years.
