Latin American Studies, Global Affairs departments to hold panel discussion on Occupy Movements, Arab Uprisings
The Departments of Latin American Studies and Global Affairs are hosting a roundtable discussion called “The Occupy Movement in Global Perspective: Citizen Protest from Wall Street to the Arab Uprisings,” which seeks to “[bring] together Mason scholars as well as activists from Occupy DC to discuss the challenges, impacts, and prospects of [these] new global social [movements].” Panelists include Rich Rubenstein, professor of Conflict Analysis and Resolution; Bassam Haddad, Director of Middle East Studies at Mason; Kevin Zeese, Organizer of the occupation at Freedom Plaza; and Ricardo Vivancos Perez, Assistant Professor of Spanish and Latino Studies. The panel will be chaired by Jo-Marie Burt, director of Latin American Studies at Mason.
The event will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the JC Cinema. Light refreshments will be served.
Student Government to host various town hall meetings this week
Alongisde the Academic Advising Forum, Student Government will be holding a series of town hall meetings this week, beginning with the Parking Town Hall on Monday, Nov. 28 in the Piedmont Multipurpose Room at 6 p.m. Director of Parking and Transportation Services Josh Cantor will be in attendance to give an overview of recent Parking changes and answer student questions.
Next is the Housing Town Hall on Wednesday Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. in the JC Bistro, which will give students a chance to present questions and concerns to Housing administrators.
A Dining Town Hall will be held on Wednesday Nov. 30 in the JC Bistro at 7:30, immediately following the Housing Town Hall. Representatives from Mason Dining will be on hand to address all Dining related questions.
Famous bluegrass outfit to perform at Center for the Arts
Acclaimed bluegrass group Dailey & Vincent, consisting of Jamie Dailey and John Vincent, will be performing a set of holiday favorites titled “I Believe in Christmas” at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. Dailey & Vincent have received a combined 13 International Bluegrass Music Awards, 17 Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America Awards, a 2011 Grammy nomination, and two #1 albums on the Billboard charts. Limited student tickets are available at the box office with valid Mason ID starting Nov. 22, with regular tickets available for $24, $40, and $48.
Fashion show seeks to educate as well as entertain
The Rock the Runway Fashion Show, which aims to educate students about HIV/AIDS while showcasing the latest fashion trends, will be held on Friday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in Dewberry Hall. The event will be hosted by radio/TV personality Jeannie “Kitty of the City” Jones and feature a performance from international recording artist Rashida as well as special appearances by Urbanknowlogy, GMUnit, and DJ Rush Hour. An after-party will be held immediately after the fashion show from 10 p.m. until midnight in the JC Bistro, featuring music from DJ Eskada.
No tickets are needed, but students are encouraged to arrive early because seating is limited. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
Information session to teach undergraduates all about fellowships
The Honors College will be hosting the first Friday Fellowship Session on Dec. 2 from noon to 12:45 p.m. in Johnson Center room C. Attendees will learn about competitive undergraduate fellowships in all disciplines and how to apply for those fellowships. No RSVP is needed and light refreshments will be served.
