Weekly Rundown: 5 events for your week

Thursday, Feb. 9
Love Jones

What it is: Presented by the Akoma Circle Mentoring Program, Love Jones is an annual showcase of Mason student talent; including poetry, spoken word, and dance, all centering around the theme of love.  Part of Black/African Heritage Month.

Why it’s our pick: Supporting student talent is always worthwhile, especially in the conext of such a postive and powerful theme.

Where: Dewberry Hall, 7:30 – 10 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 10
Best Buddies VA Valentine's Dance

What it is: The Mason chapter of the Best Buddies volunteer organization is hosting their annual Valentine's Dance this Friday, with music from DJ Krazy Kat and food provided by Hard Times Cafe.

Why it’s our pick: Celebrating friendship and fun, this dance will be a great chance to have some good clean fun. All are welcome to attend.

Where: The Hub (SUB II) Ballroom, 4 – 8 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11
Vagina Monologues

What it is: Part of the V-Day Initiative, a global movement to end violence against women, Mason Sexual Assault Services in presenting the Vagina Monologues once this Friday and twice this Saturday.  Limited free student tickets are available through Weekends at Mason.  A free reception will follow the Friday performance.

Why it’s our pick: Not only will the show be entertaining, but proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Mason Victims of Violence Fund and Dating Abuse Stops Here, so attendees will also be supporting a good cause.  

Where: Harris Theater, 8 p.m. on Friday; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday

Saturday, Feb. 11
Mason Man March

What it is: In simulation of the 1995 Million Man March in Washington D.C., Mason's men will be charged with walking to uplift the community and striving for academic excellence.  Part of Black/African Heritage Month.

Why it’s our pick: Several men who attended the original 1995 march have been invited to attend as guest speakers; this should be an uplifting and inspirational experience for the whole Mason community.

Where: JC Plaza and Dewberry Hall, 11 a.m.

Sunday, Feb. 12
Ana Masry: Still Living in the Square!

What it is: Presented by the Ana Masry (Arabic for "I'm Egyptian") Foundation, this event celebrates Egyptian identity and cultural diversity through music, poetry, and singing.

Why it’s our pick: The performances will showase Egypt's cultural diversity, featuring matieral from the Coptic, Islamic, Sufi, and Nubian traditions.  This should be a great opportunity to experience this historic, diverse culture firsthand.  Mason student tickets are available for $5.

Where: The Hub (SUB II) Ballroom, 6 – 8:30 p.m.
