Top 5 Weekend Picks October 25

Every week Connect2Mason will offer five entertainment picks for your weekend. Ranging from on-campus to off-campus events, Connect2Mason's Top 5 will give you a jump start on your weekend. Here are the Top 5 picks for this weekend:

1. Into the Woods

When: Friday, October 26 at 8 p.m., Saturday, October 27 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, October 28 at 4 p.m.
Where: Center for the Arts Concert Hall

Taking the characters and stories from the Brother’s Grimm, Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Into the Woods” will not disappoint. Marking one of the first collaborations between both the School of Music and the Department of Theater, “Into the Woods” features an all student cast. Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Into the Woods” is one of Sondheim’s great musical theater masterpieces. Reflecting on people’s wishes and desires, popular characters such as Cinderella and Rapunzle bring the magical fairy tale world to life.

Tickets can be purchased at the Center for the Arts box office. Two free students tickets can be reserved with a valid Mason ID.

2. The Gulag Paintings
When:
Now through Friday, November 9
Where: Mason Hall Atrium Gallery

Artist Nikolai Getman was a prisoner at the notorious Kolyma Gulag labor camp in the late 1940s and early 1950s. After he was released in 1954, Getman began on a series of paintings reflecting his experiences in the labor camp. Getman died in 2004 at his home in Russia, but his work still leaves a profound mark in understanding Cold War history. The paintings of Getman are a reflection of the horrific events he was present to during his time in the labor camp. Getman’s work is the only visual account that is available of the atrocities that occurred at Joseph Stalin’s labor camps. A selection of “The Gulag Paintings” is available on display in the Mason Hall Atrium until Friday, November 9 free of cost. 

3. Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra
When:
Saturday, October 27 at 6 p.m.
Where: The Kennedy Center

Featuring members of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, come see free live classical music at its best. The Kennedy Center’s Millennium stage features free performances each week ranging from classical music, small ensembles, dance and theater. This week’s performance on the Millennium Stage will be a performance of Franz Schubert’s Octet in F Major. Come for free live music at a great venue!

4. Haunted Hallow in Northern Va
When:
Thursday, October 25 through Sunday, October 28 from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.
Where: Warrenton, Va.

If you’re brave enough, come get scared in Warrenton, Va.’s Haunted Hallow. Come get a tour of an abandoned, haunted farm house. With an unidentified cemetery just behind the house, odd activities began occurring shortly after the owner’s moved in. With odd ghost sightings and strange tales, enjoy your Halloween weekend in the only way possible: getting scared!

5. Creepy Carnival
When: Saturday, October 27 from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m.

Where: Dewberry Hall

Sponsored by the Office of Student Involvement and Program Board, come spend your Saturday night with Halloween tricks and treats. Featuring a Haunted Maze and the mentalist duo the Evansons, don’t miss out on a fun time on campus to get into the Halloween spirit. Come in your best dressed Halloween costume to enter the costume competition to win a Nook e-reader.
