Mason Athletics and Mason Cable Network to begin live stream game coverage
Mason Cable Network and Mason’s athletic department reached an agreement to begin streaming live broadcasts of all home athletic games beginning in October with men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. The first official collaborative broadcast will be on Oct. 4 when Mason’s women’s volleyball team plays host to Saint Louis University.
“Mason Cable Network began broadcasting games about a year and a half ago, unofficially, and I feel honored for student media and athletics to be joined together to provide amazing broadcasts for the Mason community,” said Jake McLernon, graduate assistant and supervisor of Mason Cable Network’s live sports event broadcasting arm.
These broadcasts will be available to subscribers to Patriot Vision on GoMason.com or to all on-campus students on channel 231. The live broadcasts will also be available on the new Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
"Though it is a student-run production, those involved treat it with the utmost professionalism,” McLernon said. “I am honored to be able to work with the students who work on the stream team, they are coming into this experience gaining amazing hands-on knowledge on a near professional level of broadcasting. We get to provide an amazing service to a stellar athletic program while giving students the opportunity to learn on the fly."
Mason Cable Network is comprised of students handling on-air and off-air logistics and this production team, affectionately known as the ‘stream team,’ working with the Mason athletic department will be no different. Sophomore Tyler Byrum will act as the stream team’s play-by-play commentator and is currently an anchor on Mason Cable News. Freshman Tyler Resh will be the stream team’s color commentator. Both Byrum and Resh are hoping this opportunity to broadcast live games for Mason Cable Network can give them the knowledge and experience required to reach their aspirations to be sports broadcasters in the future.
"From day one when I stepped on campus, I knew that this is what I wanted to achieve; being part of this broadcast as a color commentator has brought so much satisfaction and the feeling of accomplishment to not only myself but my entire family and friends as well,” Resh said. “It is truly an honor to be a part of history here at George Mason, and I could not be more grateful for this opportunity that the Office of Student Media has presented to me."
The new partnership will allow Mason Cable Network to produce, at a minimum, 15 live games in the fall with plans to continue the partnership into the spring sports season. This partnership will complement the pre-existing coverage provided by GoMason.com through Patriot Vision.
