Student Reaction to Sunday’s Redskins Game

By Connect2Mason Writer Lana Sieg.

The Redskins love to have their backs against the wall and they made that official losing to the Cowboys at home on Sunday. With many teams in the NFC fighting for a wild card spot for the playoffs, the Redskins are going to have to win almost, if not all, their remaining games, to secure a spot in the playoffs. Starting the season at 4-1, everyone started to jump on the Skins’ bandwagon, but are people falling off of it now? Throughout the semester, before and after a game, there are many Mason students sporting their redskins gear on campus but will that change if the Redskins continue to lose?

There are some mason students that have mixed feelings on the outlook for the remaining season for the Skins. Eric Olson, a junior at Mason said, “If they can pull it together and win 4 of the last 6, they will very likely make the playoffs in the feeble NFC." The addition of Hall will benefit a secondary that is weakened by the poor play of Laron Landry, but the pass rush has been non-existent. A stronger pass rush and much better play out of the offensive line, especially in pass blocking, will get Washington back into contention for a wild card spot.”

“I see the Redskins securing a playoff spot this season," said Mason student, Eric Taylor. "The only problem is, they are in a tough division which is allowing weaker teams in other NFC divisions like Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Arizona to have better records than Washington (the Carolina Panthers are the only good team outside of the NFC East). The NFC East is the best division in the NFL so I feel that any other team Washington plays outside of their division is an easy victory.” The Redskins are playing the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday who has a record of 2-8 so far this season.

As for a SuperBowl appearance this year, Eric Taylor also said, “I feel the Redskins have all the talent in the world to win games and make it to the SuperBowl. The offense just needs to get in sync and the offensive line needs to protect their quarterback. The defense should keep playing at the high level they are playing now, but they just need to figure out a way to pressure quarterbacks more and get some sacks.” So hopefully the Redskins don’t let us down and we Mason students can continue to cheer them on as they try to make a run to this year’s playoffs!
