Homecoming Plans Approved by Senate

After the induction of two new student senators, the members passed a bill approving funding for the Feb. 13 pep rally. They also agreed to allocate $200 for Mason Bookstore merchandise to give away at various Homecoming events. The Senate’s biggest giveaway, however, might be the basketball autographed by Mason Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Larranaga and the entire team.
“Now that the basketball team is doing pretty well, its probably going to a get a really good turnout,” said Student Senator Nicole Kukuruda.
In addition to those items, the Senate also plans to give away Mason-decorated refillable bottles. The Senate hopes that by passing out the bottles, it will encourage others to purchase them now that they are on sale.
The Senate also plans to distribute their supply of 5,000 “Gold Rush” t-shirts during Homecoming, hoping it elevates school spirit for Saturday’s sold out basketball game. Kukuruda hopes the shirts will transform Mason’s student section into “a sea of gold” for Mason’s contest against UNC Wilmington.
Following the approval of the Homecoming funds, Student Senate Speaker Brad Lindsay expressed his concern with some of the Senators’ dedication to their work.
“This meeting is not what being a Senator is about,” Lindsay said. “Going out and advocating on behalf of the students [and] representing the students is [what it’s all about].”
“A lot of members are just doing the bare minimum,” said Lindsay, who did not specify names. “If you’re doing that, then why are you in this organization?”
Lindsay also mentioned that Senators are not volunteering at a satisfactory rate for university-sponsored events. In addition, he said that members should closely examine their reasons for participating in the Senate, which has 32 members.
The Student Senate’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 14 at 4:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center.
