Basketball rebounding into 2011-12 season with Mason Madness

The 2011-12 men’s and women’s basketball teams will be taking the court for the first time this Friday, October 14^th.  They will be accompanied by street drummer Peter Rabbit, Snap Boogie, as seen on America’s Got Talent, and Mason groups including Doc Nix and the Green Machine and the Masonettes.  Head coaches Paul Hewitt and Jeri Porter will give speeches and both teams will participate in on-court activities.  This is every fan’s first chance to see the teams in action and celebrate the Patriot spirit.  Doors open at 9 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.

Wanda Sykes to supply comedy to Patriot Center

Wanda Sykes, ranked in the top 25 funniest people in America by Entertainment Weekly, will appear at the Patriot Center this Saturday to deliver the comedy goods.  Sykes is known for her quick and smart witted stand up and has appeared in numerous TV shows and feature films.  The show begins at 8 p.m.  Tickets can be purchased through the Patriot Center box office and all other Ticketmaster outlets for $45 and $35.  Discounts are available for Mason students, faculty, and staff.  Presented by University Life and Involvement.  

Family Weekend: a chance for students to show their Mason pride

This Friday through Sunday, Mason students will get a chance to show their loved ones their Patriot pride at Family Weekend 2011.  The festivities will include shows, tours, and sporting events, as well as a wine tasting.  A full schedule of events is available online.  Family Weekend rates are available at the Ritz Carlton, Tyson’s Corner.  Sponsored by the office of Orientation and Family Programs and Services.

Life of Frida Kahlo to give insight into the trials, tribulations of surrealist portrait artist

Those with an artistic side may want to catch The Life of Frida Kahlo, a documentary detailing the life and death of one of the most famous Mexican portrait artists.  Kahlo is principally known for her surrealist self-portraits.  The viewing will be held at the JC Cinema Wednesday, Oct. 12^th beginning at 6:30 PM.  Pizza and refreshments will be served.  Sponsored by the Office of Diversity Programs and Multicultural Services as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.    

Live show rocks Corner Pocket

The GMU Music Productions Club will be presenting a night of live music this Wednesday from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Corner Pocket in the Hub, formerly SUBII.  Performances will span multiple genres and include acts such as Call for Fire, Primordial Soup, I am the Kaleidoscope, and others.  Presented as part of the Corner Pocket Concert Series.  More information can be found here.
