Mason's Youth Group

By Broadside Sports Editor Brian Chan

One of the key additions to George Mason University softball will be their new state-of-the-art ballpark. With a change of scenery, the Patriots look to exceed expectations once again this season as they were picked to finish last in the conference in the preseason polls.

Mason softball was incepted in 1979 and at one time it was one of the school’s strongest programs. In 2002, the Patriots reached the 40-win plateau for the third time in school history. Since then, the team has gone through a dry spell.

Sorority Hosts "Know Hip-Hop"

By Broadside Staff Writer Ijeoma Nwatu

You might know that the birthplace of hip-hop is New York City. You might also know that the first hip-hop album to win a Grammy was back in 1989 by Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Well, there will be an opportunity to learn more about hip-hop on Wednesday, at 7 p.m. as the pink and green ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will host, “OI Know Hip-Hop.”

Mason Chokes Again

By Broadside Staff Writer Ryan Dempsey

Last Thursday, the men’s basketball team (16-8, 9-5) traveled to the University of Delaware to take on the Blue Hens (11-15, 5-9). The Patriots had hopes of moving closer to the top spot of the Colonial Athletic Association, but their rally fell short as the team suffered another loss on the road losing to Delaware, 66-58.

For the Love of Local Bands

By Broadside Staff Writer Marian McLaughlin

The Velvet Lounge highlighted the best of local metal acts on last Sunday. This two-story club located on U Street is just right around the corner from the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.

The first floor is a bar and lounge area, and the stage is upstairs. It generally hosts local bands and traveling, small acts that are on independent record deals.

We Got Skills

Broadside Staff Writer Maria Cianfichi

America's got talent? More like Mason's got talent.

Last Tuesday, students packed into the Student Union Building II ballroom to watch the annual homecoming week talent show.

The talent show, hosted by senior Lee Warner, began with an introduction of the three judges; Katie Murray, assistant director of programs and services, LaMar Rice, resident director of Chesapeake housing area and Key Jones, graduate assistant of fraternity and sorority life.

How Horrifying is 'Friday the 13th?'

The latest Friday the 13th film came out last week. If you are a fan of blood and horror, it might be the movie scare you've been waiting for.

Songwriter Gets Intimate

By Broadside Correspondent Patrick Wall

Honest music in an intimate setting was on display Friday night as Pat McGee took the stage at the Johnson Center Bistro.

Program Board was responsible for organizing the concert, something the group enjoys putting together, according to Concert Chair Kristen Byrne.

There were no fancy lights or equipment to be found, just quality songwriting in an open and warm setting. This is fitting for the performer, since for McGee, playing live is about being true to the music.

What Is The Enclosed Instruction Book?

The Enclosed Instruction Book exists under the guise of a new wave and local artist show. In truth, that is exactly what it is; the secret lies in the nature of that music. New Wave was a broad label placed on numerous diverse artists from Yellow Magic Orchestra to Divinyls to Wreckless Eric to the B-52s. New Wave, however unintentionally, united punk, synthpop, post-punk, and even bossa nova under one flag; after the excess of Disco and the pop giants of the late 70s, a reversion to creating music without instructions.

Talks With Tier

Tierney Kain is Mason's own Gossip Girl: full of enthusiasm and energy drinks, she's chatting it up on campus with students and getting bands to share live acoustic performances. Browse her video archives for conversations about zombies, women, tours of dorm rooms and more.
