The future of the WGMU stream

After getting permission to take the status of the WGMU broadcast system into my own hands, I went into the Johnson Center today with the intention of improving our stream to make it more accessible to everyone, on every operating system, without relying on the proprietary WMA format. (Also, I did a bit for the sound quality).

The Loudness Wars

Assuming my grasp on logic isn't completely broken, it seems to be that as technology progresses through the years, it should improve. Cars go faster, buildings get stronger, computers get smaller, things like that. Why, then, have CDs started to sound WORSE? Why is it that if I compare ABBA's "One Of Us" on a 1983 CD to the same song on a 2005 remaster, it has less dynamics and feels more muddy? Why does each drum hit stay at the same volume, but make the music behind it go away, instead of just being louder than it is?

Four Weeks To Go

It's hard to imagine a schoolyear coming to a close. I'm a freshman, so this is the first time this has happened to me; it's weird to think that in the summer of 2008 (was it really a year ago?) I thought senior year of high school had lasted surprisingly quickly. High school, where we sit in a building for six hours, with very little time between classes, coming home loaded with more work to remind us of what we learned in a relatively small period of time.

The Long Story Of A Beige Computer

Just because it's gotten increasingly confusing over the past week or so, here's a detailed blog post about the current situation WGMU is in, and why it's probably next to impossible to listen to us.

How To Get To Jammin' Java From The Fairfax Campus Without A Car

I'd be a jerk and say "by foot", since I have an idiotic ability to throw away hours at a time walking long distances, but even I can't make it over there due to some nasty overpasses and road areas that would probably result in me getting hit by a car.
